Sort-of-maybe-ghost Meredith is still panicking that she can't actually die today, and Bonnie nonchalantly assures her it will pass. It's quite a change from the girl screaming at her about not appreciating life, to this one who doesn't seem to care. Can't these ghosts keep things straight? At that moment, Meredith looks up and sees her mom in the hall and asks, "Mom?" Cut to commercial. It seemed redundant to show Ellis and also have Meredith say something. I understand wanting to cut on Meredith saying "Mom" but think maybe that's all we should have seen for now. It's kind of clumsily done.
Meredith walks into the hall with Denny behind her, and he literally pushes her gently ahead to go speak to her.
Sort-of-maybe-alive Meredith is still grey, though less so now that her body has warmed up. Cristina stares down and takes her feet in her hands, quietly telling the doctors to try again. When they don't react, she demands, terrifyingly, that they try again. It prods them to action, and Bailey seems relieved to have something to do and someone else to do it for, and orders them to do one more round of drugs.
Meredith walks towards her mom through the hallway of surgatory. In real life, McDreamy is still trying desperately to save the elder grey, but she looks pretty rooted here. She walks up to her daughter, all business. In a strange arty moment they pass each other and then round to face each other. Her mom says curtly, "You shouldn't be here." Meredith tells her that she shouldn't either. She seems really tentative around her mom. Ellis, still all business, orders, "Just keep going. Don't be a damn... " but then she pauses and catches herself, and gathers her daughter in a fierce hug. Mere is teary as Ellis tells her, "You are... you are anything but ordinary, Meredith." Finally hearing this, she closes her eyes and grips her mom tightly. Ellis cries too, then pulls Meredith's arms off her and tells her to run. Mere hesitates, but then takes off down the hall, and into the light. Her body is still unresponsive, as well as her mother's, as Derek continues to try and revive her.
There's one tiny beep, and Bailey asks hopefully if it's a heartbeat; Burke confirms that it is. Cristina finally breathes, as do they all.
Some shots of Seattle tell us that time has passed.
