First she has some work to do, and she brings Richard, Mark and Mere the donor scans of Louis' new organs. Almost everything looks good but they do notice a spot on the liver. Mark immediately declares the organs to be unsuitable but Richard doesn't want to jump to conclusions just yet, thinking that it could be something benign. Basically, he knows Louis isn't going to live much longer without a liver so he'd like to see if they can make this work. Bailey has an idea to operate on the donor and take out the tumor to see what it is, and Richard thinks it's brilliant. But Mark is absolutely against it and can't believe they'd even consider giving Louis compromised organs. Bailey asks Mark if he's really arguing with former Chief Webber, but Mark gets vaguely threatening as he asks if she's really arguing with the acting Chief. She's pissed off, but knows she is beaten and Mark tells them to call UNOS and put Louis back on the list.
When they deliver the bad news to Louis Richard tries to sound upbeat that they might get another set of organs but Louis echoes all of our thoughts and gently tells Richard to cut the crap since they know he won't live that long. Mere asks him again if there is anyone they can call but Louis claims to be relieved that his family isn't there to be disappointed yet again. He does tell Richard very sincerely that he is the best doc he ever had, and not to beat himself up since he knows Richard did everything he could. But the words get under Richard's skin and he tells Louis that in fact he didn't. He turns to Bailey and tells her that her idea was a good one and there's no reason the organs shouldn't work. This seems rather inappropriate to muse about all of this in front of the possible recipient, but Louis doesn't seem bothered. Bailey points out that the donor is still on life support and the teams coming to get the other organs aren't coming until later. Mere is worried about Mark but Richard assures her that he can handle Mark himself.
Mark is at lunch, lamenting that no one is attending Beef With the Chief and asserting that had Avery actually named it thus, the place would be crawling with attendees. Avery wants to go study but Mark won't let the only company he has go, until Derek walks up and asks for a moment. Avery makes his escape, and Derek tells Mark that he came up with an idea to carve a foam cradle for Jason's head for the surgery. Mark isn't impressed and tells Derek he can do better, that the foam wouldn't be flexible enough if they needed to adjust Jason's position during surgery. Again, he orders his friend to, "Rise." Pretty soon Derek's fist might rise to Mark's nose.
