As they walk through the forest, she explains that Hank Benson died of an unexpected pulmonary embolism and that her plans to perform an autopsy were interrupted. Hank was a mine foreman who had trouble breathing and an unexplained rash, which don't match the heart attack. She didn't let the Agrius people handle the autopsy because she felt responsible for him. And when the company started pressuring her, she knew that she was on to something. Chance says he understands, and she calls him "a mercenary with a heart of gold." I hate this lady.
p>Goons pick up Big Mike. The head goon assigns various goon teams to different hills. "Let's tighten the noose," he says.Guerrero is working in a cube farm and talks to Winston on his Telemarketer Headset. He turns down the opportunity to go sing Happy Birthday to Janice and lists the last calls in and out of Agrius headquarters. Twelve hours ago, a call went from Tanarak Island to Agrius CEO Jason Banneker, which means this goes to the top. Banneker immediately made two calls: one to his lawyer (makes sense) and one to the head of R&D, Dr. David Patel. Why would a problem on a tiny Alaskan island trigger a call to R&D? Guerrero wants to ask Patel directly, but Winston says that eggheads never talk. Guerrero calls him a quitter and cuts the call off when someone brings him some cake. He cheerfully admits that he doesn't work there. We see that he's been in Gladys Wong's cubicle. Damn, I was really hoping this was Guerrero's day job.
By the way, Winston's got a nice armillary sphere on his desk. Between that and the library card catalog, I quite like the decor in there.
Back to the forest! Jessica's not sure how they'll get around the roadblock, and Chance explains that he plans to drive down to the marina and take a fishing boat to the mainland. Jessica asks Chance not to kill anyone, since she's a doctor. He makes her hide behind a tree, and there's a firefight. Bang! Bang! Rat-a-tat-tat! Run! Oh no! They're stopped by an enormous cliff near a waterfall. "We just make them think that we jumped?" "Yeah." "Okay, how?" "By jumping." Naturally. "On the count of three. One--" And then he grabs her and jumps off the cliff. Whee! Ker-splash!
