Paternity

A blond moppet of about four or five years of age runs pell-mell down the street, the front of his shirt soaked in blood. So naturally someone calls the Sex Police. On the sidewalk, a paramedic tells Elliot and Olivia that that since the kid's uninjured, it's not his blood. Leave it to the detectives, doc. They ask the kid his name, but all he knows is that he's "Tommy" and his mom goes by "Mommy." Oh, for cute, their names rhyme. Suddenly the kid leaps into Elliot's arms, saying he wants his daddy. Taken aback at this sudden outpouring of emotion and the equally sudden ruination of his suit, Elliot promises Tommy that they'll find dad.

The credits and commercials burn up an hour of in-show time, after which we find Elliot in the squad room, with the kid still clinging to him. Apparently Tommy hasn't let go this whole time. That leaves the rest of the detectives to theorize about who the kid is and where he came from. Cragen hits on the idea of putting the kid on Channel 10, sort of an Amber Alert in reverse. Cut to Elliot, on-camera, still holding the kid and making an appeal from the police station to viewers to contact the number on their screen if they recognize Tommy. "This little boy needs his family," he says, somehow refraining from adding, "And I need my hands back." After the reporter signs off, Olivia tells Elliot that Cragen wants them to drop the kid off at ACS so they can start running down leads. But Elliot isn't any more keen on separating than the kid is, so he tells Olivia to have the other detectives help her with that. A kid-shaped tumor is quite handy for getting out of work, it turns out.

At home, Elliot does manage to get Tommy to release him long enough to stick the boy in the bathtub. With his hugely pregnant wife sitting next to him, they talk about how long it's been since they gave a kid a bath, and now they're going to be starting all over again. Kathy expects a girl, and suspects Elliot of wanting a boy, but he won't admit it. All he wants is healthy, he says, trying not to jinx it. Trying way too hard, as it will turn out.

When Elliot and his newly clean tumor return to the station, a crazy redhead is claiming him as her own, but it's obvious she's a crank. "Sounded legit on the phone," Fin apologizes as the loon is dragged out of the squad room. "I didn't know she was from Planet Zero." Seconds after Elliot ducks into the back to avoid more work, a blond guy in a suit bulls into the squad room, introducing himself as Jake Keegan and looking for Tommy. Olivia calms him down, and calls back to Elliot to have Tommy peek out a window to see if he IDs Jake. "Daddy!" Tommy rejoices. "You finded him!" Okay, cute, but my three-year-old says "found." But then he also thinks the singular of "clothes" is "clo," so I shouldn't judge. Tommy runs out and gloms onto his dad, as Olivia asks whether Jake has talked to his wife. Dad says he's tried to call, but hasn't raised her on her home or cell phones. Elliot tells him about the blood on Tommy when they found him, and Dad gets very worried very fast. Elliot and Olivia want to go back to his home with him, but leave Tommy at the station. Good luck with that.
