So anyway, it's totally dark and Heather and Miles are asleep I guess, while Samantha and Mike are still trying to get a fire going so that they can eat. Samantha just wants to go to bed, and while I understand her point, they really should eat for strength. Finally, Mike just says that he needs help, and Samantha apologizes and asks what she can do. They work together to get their food cooked and eat it and feel like they are stronger for overcoming adversity. Adversity that they created, to be sure.
The next morning, it's foggy and rainy and miserable looking. They open up their maps and find out that they have to climb a volcano and then swim in a lake to retrieve another map. Ooh, swimming. That won't be good for Miles and Heather.
Both couples take off. And they are climbing a mountain. It does not look like fun AT ALL. They are all sweating and gasping and not in a sexy way. Mike and Samantha find the water first, but the fog is getting thicker and thicker, so it's tough for them to figure out where to swim. They do have inner tubes to swim on, at least. Mike and Samantha retrieve their map just as Heather and Miles arrive at the lake. And the inner tubes are a sort of leveler, so Miles's lack of swimming ability isn't as much of a factor.
There are seriously a million commercial breaks in this episode. They must not have had much usable footage for this final leg. I'm guessing between the pooping and the fog, there wasn't much they could show.
So everyone is out of the water and they are all soaking wet, but have to make their way back down the mountain. Samantha slips and rolls her ankle, so they have to slow down a little. Heather either says, "Go until you puke" a lot or they keep playing the same clip over and over. They never show both couples in the same shot, so it's kind of difficult to tell how close they actually are.
And then there's the finish line, and Mike and Samantha appear in the distance. They are the winners! Yay! Or boo! Depending on how you feel! Derek (that's his name!) welcomes them and reminds them that they have won a first-class trip around the world. They swig some champagne in celebration. In their post-race interview, Mike says that he's happy they won, but he's also happy that they found each other. Samantha starts crying and claims that she's happy. I get the vibe that he's more into her than she is into him. Just my sense. I'm rarely wrong about these things. (I'm always wrong about these things.)
