Goose: "So he looks broken down so the odds go up but he keeps the horse."
Meanwhile, Escalante is going to have a creepily intense conversation with the other most creepy and angry and intense person of the show, Ace Bernstein. Gus and Ace are so mobbed up that they don't even know when they're being scary, and they can talk about things like goats and carrots and still make it seem like they are offering to murder your ass. Escalante introduces them to Leon, and for once Leon doesn't piss Escalante off by opening his mouth.
Afterwards, Gus and Ace have yet another conversation where Ace explains basic shit to Gus that he would already know, and this is verbatim what that is like:
Gus: "Hey Ace, what is a claiming race?"
Ace: "They set a price where you can buy any horse in the race."
Gus: "When do you put up your dough?"
Ace: "Before the race, you got to put your claim in."
Gus: "And then after he runs, you can pull your offer?"
Ace: "No! You own him no matter what. Unless there's more than one claim! But you knew that."
Gus agrees that he did know that, and then they laugh. HBO, ladies and gents.
LEON BREAKS HIS STREAK
Leon: "Should I warm him up real good, Mr. Escalante?"
Escalante: "Why you ask a question like that?"
Leon: "It was a fairly benign question, you dork."
Escalante tells Gus and Ace to bet on the horse that we're talking about this week, and Gus gets excited about placing a bet on the horse. Helpfully, Ace explains what a "race" is and how a "race" is about one horse running "faster" than other horses and then he explains what a "horse" is and then he explains that they're standing on "grass" and wearing "clothes" and Gus is very grateful for all of this information.
THE RACE!
The horses get ready to run and see which horse runs faster than the other ones. Nick Nolte is probably talking to himself somewhere out there. Leon feels super creepy about riding a horse because of that horrible thing that happened.
Gus: "Ace, this is the biggest bet I ever made! By $195! Do you believe it?"
Jacob: "So you bet $200, then. That's the whole joke, I 'wager.'"
The horses start running. It does not look good for Twitchy's horse, the one that Leon is riding and that Escalante both does and does not want to sell, but then later on it works out and the horse runs faster than the other horses. People that are excited about this: Mostly everybody on the show. They love it when horses run faster than other horses. Leon wins.
