Laurel: "Even though I've been watching this whole convo go down from a yard away, I didn't catch any of that dialogue. But Ethan and my sister are definitely having a conversation. I am a regular Nancy Drew."
Dad: "Hey, Laurel. Can I get right up in your grill and beg you to come to this dance?"
Laurel: "Only if you spout adoption platitudes at me."
Dad: "Done. Also, you are very smart and super pretty."
Laurel: "Fine, I'll go to the dance."
Emma: "How come you work at the same country club this dance will be held at?"
Ethan: "It is a long boring story about juvie. Let me tell it to you."
Obligatorily, Ethan: "Feel the music! You have to feel the music!"
They dance for one million years and he keeps telling her to feel the music because there has never been a dance scene* where they don't say that a bunch of times. Emma has a crush on Ethan, and it is not unrequited, but Sutton stubbornly continues to exist, so they just dance:
Emma: "You're so poor and ethnic! How did you learn to dance like that?"
Ethan: "Obviously Sutton taught me."
Emma, with her awesome face: I get weirded so hard all the time.
She also does not seem to be getting better at dancing. Or perhaps she's just prolonging the magic of dancing with Ethan's face? Perhaps she is playing a Game. A Lying one.
NINA SAYERS YOU, NINA SAYERS ME
Eduardo, the Balletmaster: "You must* feel the music!"
Char: (Does not feel the music.)
Eduardo: "Mads, come feel the music with me!"
They feel the music for a long time, also. I don't know if Eduardo is playing a Lying Game but possibly he is interested in playing a Statutory Rape Game. It seems positively likely that Char is into that Game. Which makes it all the sadder when he calls her out after class for a tête-à-tête, which is not a ballet term but is actually French for getting your ass kicked out of ballet forever. Just didn't feel it enough. The music, I mean.
Mads: "Eduardo is riding her really hard, if you know what I mean."
Emma: "She wishes."
Mads: "No, I mean that her entire personality is being ready to crack at any moment. Her abusive alcoholic mom has kind of made a dang mess of her."
Emma: "I totally know what you're talking about. I am feeling you, Mads, on that one. Maybe we should be friends to her because we are her friends."
Mads: "No, she won't talk about it because she's so medicated and in denial all the time."
Emma: "Jinx, I was totally just about to say that! We are such best friends."
