Killer, Heels

They head back to the cabin to tell Emma the news. Ethan says he's going to go home to talk to Dan. Sutton tries to tag along so she can once more weasel her way into his life, but Emma reminds her she needs to be studying for midterms. Sutton is all "Woe is me! I can't possibly study now. Someone tried to kill me!" And, yes, it's a valid point, but it's just that much more annoying and diva-like coming from Sutton. Emma decides she's had enough and says she'll resume the twin swap so Sutton can focus on finding Derek and so that their sudden academic nosedive doesn't tip anyone off to the twinanigans. Of course Sutton is suspicious that Emma is trying to take over her life again. Emma, unfortunately, is too diplomatic to tell Sutton to get her head out of her ass. Speaking of Sutton's head, she hands over a Band-Aid to Emma (alas, not a sparkly one).

Mercer house, Emma walks right into a rare moment of empowerment and good parenting from Ted and Kristin. She has to sit there and take it as they dress her down for Sutton's crappy attitude. She apologizes earnestly and tells them how much she respects and appreciates everything they do for her. Kristin accepts an "I'm sorry" hug, as does Ted, but he's still wary.

Elsewhere, Laurel is at a coffee shop when she runs into the cute guitarist from the party she sang at the other night. She compliments his song and trouble-shoots a chord in his bridge that's bothering him. Just as he gets up the nerve to ask if he can join her, Justin walks in, plasters a somewhat hostile smile on his face, and introduces himself as Laurel's boyfriend. Justin tells Laurel her parents might wonder where she is, and they leave as the guitar cutie wistfully watches Laurel leave.

"Sutton" has stopped by the Rybak house to copy Mads notes from the last few days (clearly actual Sutton didn't take any). Alec walks in to the room, so Mads loudly mentions her "study date" with Sutton the next night. Emma issues a confused look, and Mads gives her a "go with it" look, so Emma does without realizing what Sutton promised Mads the day before.

Whitehorse trailer. Ethan doesn't even bid Dan a brotherly hello before grilling him about giving Derek a ride home the night of the party. He reams Dan out for not making the connection between Derek looking "like a drowned rat" (Dan's words) and the fact that the Mercer car went into the lake. Dan says of course it did but reminds Ethan that it was in everyone's best interest at the time to go with Ethan's joyride story. He asks if Ethan has any information that might warrant the case being reopened, and Ethan has to admit he doesn't have anything.
