Emma heads inside and settles in for pretzels and basketball with Ted. They small talk about studying, and she admits chemistry is getting her down. He tells her only lab nerds really need that stuff. Speaking of science and doctors and such, he wants to check her head wound. She recoils and refuses to let him touch her before leaving abruptly. He tells Kristin that Devil Sutton has won out over Angel Sutton, adding in defeat, "That's our real daughter."
Mads arrives home and Alec calmly lets her lie before telling her he knows she wasn't at the library with Sutton. She comes clean about the band, and Rebeccannie foolishly gets excited about how great they are and how lucky Mads was to get tickets to the show. She realizes her misstep and lets Alec resume parenting. He sends Mads up to her room, saying they'll talk about it later. Rebeccannie apologizes for undermining Alec's authority. She admits she just wants Mads to like her, then lingers around to clean up even though Alec basically told her to take a hike.
At the Mercer house, Emma is icing Ethan's hand as her fills her in about what went down with Derek. He tells her Sutton wants to go back to the body shop tomorrow, and Emma insists Ethan join her as protection. He tells her, "You know every second I'm with her, I'm thinking about you." Emma gives a strained smile.
The next morning, Dan heads to a crime scene. It's just any crime scene, though. It's murder, and the vic bleeding out on the pavement is Derek, who was beaten to death. Dan chats with the deputy who pulled over Ethan the night before. He tells Dan about Ethan's busted hand and seeing Sutton, says he didn't write it up officially but thinks it's better to give Dan a little heads-up considering how guilty Ethan looks. Dan asks for one hour before the deputy mentions anything to his superiors.
At school, Emma approaches Mads, who is mightily pissed. She assumes that "Sutton" was jealously planning all along to screw her over and fink on her to Alec.
Dan heads back to the trailer to find Ethan. He tells them they found Derek's body. Ethan admits they scuffled but that Derek was conscious and mobile when they left. Dan skips the whole "rich girls ruin boys like us" speech. It's understood. He hands Ethan all the cash he has and tells him to get out of town until he can find Derek's real killer. Ethan resists, knowing that running will make him look guilty, but Dan reminds him he has about 97 strikes against him and no credible alibi other than Sutton, who is also implicated. As he turns to his car, Ethan realizes that he may never be able to come back to Phoenix if Dan can't find Derek's killer. It may be their last time ever to see each other. With that, the brothers hug. It's very likely the most affection they've ever shown one another.
