Meanwhile, Rebeccannie is stressing that someone will go to the cops with the picture of Alec holding the tire iron that killed Derek. Alec insists someone's just "playing" with him. He wants to wait it out, see what their next move is, then "make sure it's their last." At this, he leans down to kiss Rebeccannie because nothing is more of an aphrodisiac for these nutjobs than basically threatening to whack somebody. Rebeccannie is surprised that Alec isn't scared. He suaves that it's because she's by his side. In fact, it's because he's a sociopath. Semantics!
Mercer home. Ted arrives home early and surprises Kristin. She tries to discreetly push away some files she's poring over, but Ted immediately notices that they're the ones from Justin's mother's treatment (and consequent death). Emma creeps in as they argue over whether Kristin has any right to look at his files. She insists the death affected them and is still haunting them now. Ted says he refuses to keep reliving this mistake and storms off.
Emma quietly leaves the house and makes her way to the cabin. Sutton tosses an envelope of cash here and basically tells her get out of town. Now that she's not with Ethan, why would she stay? Ethan says, before she goes, she wants to know what happened between Sutton and Ethan at the ranch. Sutton takes no small pleasure in unfurling the "details" (a.k.a. lies) in almost romance-novel terms. Emma finally stops holding back and follows Mads' advice to slap the stuffing out of her. Sutton barely takes a breath before hitting below the belt, saying cruelly, "They can take the girl out of the foster system, but you can't take the foster system out of the girl." Emma takes her stand, refusing to leave and threatening to tell the truth to Ted and Kristin about everything. She hurls the money at Sutton and makes a dramatic exit.
Emma heads to the country club, emboldened and ready to come clean at any cost. Then she finds Kristin crying in the bathroom. Kristin tries to gloss over it, but "Sutton" won't let it drop. Kristin sidesteps the issue, telling "Sutton" she wants her to chaperone Laurel's band trip to Coachella. Emma circles back around, admitting she heard Ted and Kristin fighting. Rebeccannie's name comes up, and Emma is quick to put two and two together. Kristin doesn't deny her suspicions about Ted and Rebeccannie but promises "Sutton" that everything will be okay. Mind you, actual Sutton approached and hid nearby for much of this conversation (I still don't understand how she's getting around), so now she knows Emma hasn't confessed and that her suspicions about Ted weren't entirely off-based.
