Time Of Death

Coones and Pangborn are still taking their tour. They find Donge and Fishlips in the conference room Donge has taken over. Coones explains to Pangborn that Donge is a case manager for the HMO. "Nice to meet you Mr. Dong," Pangborn says, smiling affably. Donge is affronted by the mispronunciation of his name, and corrects, "Don-guh." Pangborn tries again, but fails to make the little clicking sound in the back of her throat. Fishlips tries to help by offering, "It rhymes with Kon-guh." It also rhymes with "schlon-guh," which I'm sure is no accident. Pangborn repeats the name a couple times, as if testing it out. Coones and Fishlips exchange a look that says they can't believe how utterly incompetent the new director is. Donge says he hopes Pangborn doesn't mind that he's set up a "temporary HQ" in the "multipurpose room." He clearly doesn't care whether she minds or not. Pangborn is surprised that an HMO has a case manager on-site. Donge glares at her, but can't be arsed to unpurse his lips and explain. Luckily, Fishlips can't wait to jump in and exposit that Sutro Medical, the HMO Donge works for, has had some trouble keeping a few of their doctors in line. Gee, I wonder who. Coones finally makes a formal introduction of Fishlips, explaining that she's their "utilization review nurse." Pangborn thinks it's funny that Fishlips is a nurse and a doctor. Fishlips does not see the humor, and warns Pangborn to call her "nurse," or "doctor," but "never both." Donge emphasizes that Fishlips is their "last line of defense." Strolling over to the window, which overlooks the lobby, he mutters, "It's us against them." The others line up beside him, gazing out the window and neatly avoiding the downpour of anvils. Pangborn can't believe the writers actually gave Donge such a ridiculous line, and decides he must be kidding. "Wow, we could save a pile of cash if we could just get rid of them," she says, smiling. Donge shifts in his starched underpants, pleased to have another ally, and praises her way of thinking.

I make a mental note to replenish my stock of gin before next Wednesday.

Yang, meanwhile, peeks into a doctors' lounge, where she finds Dalgety dumping a steady stream of sugar in his mug. She tries to break the ice by commenting, "I bet that would be good on pancakes." Heh. She plunges in and tells him about Robin's situation. He suggests that maybe there really isn't anything wrong with the girl. "Yeah, maybe. And maybe she's being sent home because her insurance ends at midnight and they don't want to find anything." Dalgety's interest is piqued. Yang asks if he'll look at Robin. Sighing, he asks Yang what her name is. She tells him. Nodding to himself as he sips, he repeats, "Maggie Yang."
