Time Of Death

The chairman, Mr. Orbach, wants to know "what the Sam Hill is going on." Donge pipes up that Sutro Medical insists that the surgeons be fired. Fishlips concurs. Orbach also agrees. Pangborn doesn't, however. She stands up and leans over the intercom, telling Orbach that firing the two surgeons in question could have financial ramifications for the hospital, since Kellerman heads up one of the only profitable departments, and Dalgety's department shows promise. Orbach tells her to get to the point; like all good executive stereotypes, he's "got a date with the thirteenth green." Pangborn states that they can't fire the bad boys. Coones brown-noses that Orbach already made the decision. Pangborn lays it out: either Orbach lets her make the calls or he can find someone else for the job. Coones chimes in, "The fact that she has no previous experience in running a hospital is..." "Is a plus! You've got chutzpah, Ms. Pangborn," Orbach says. The suits can already smell defeat. Orbach tells Pangborn it's her call. Naturally, she says the mavericks can stay. "So long, Dong!" Kellerman singsongs, getting up to leave. Donge leans in and pleads with Orbach to reconsider. "Stop yanking my chest hair, Mr. Donkey," Orbach snaps. He admonishes them all to get back to what's important. "Yeah, saving lives," Donge sneers, with a weak attempt at spirit fingers. "Making money," Orbach says. Of course he does.

Pangborn catches up with the delinquents down in the lobby. She warns them that she'll "eat their balls for breakfast, scrambled, with toast," if they ever pull crap like that again. Why do they make women in power positions say things like that? Anyway, Kellerman and Dalgety don't bother flinching, since they can instead point out the photocopy tacked to the bulletin board behind her. Pangborn turns to take in the view. The docs make piggish comments that include a reference to "those puppies." Pangborn promises that the picture is nothing -- wait 'til she shows them what she flashed in the Mystery Cave. Huh? She slinks away as Kellerman gets a call -- they've got a heart for Lopez. Hey, I'd forgotten all about him!
