...Yes, Again

2007 Emmys: Handicapped

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
James Gandolfini, The Sopranos 3-2
Hugh Laurie, House 8-1
James Spader, Boston Legal 10-1
Kiefer Sutherland, 24 15-1
Denis Leary, Rescue Me 25-1

It's almost the same argument as Best Drama -- The Sopranos takes it home with a combination of quality, sentiment, and a field that doesn't have the afterburners to keep up. Hugh Laurie's gonna win one of these things eventually, but probably not this year. You can never count Spader out because: won before. The same should hold true for Kiefer, but for whatever reason, I doubt it. 24 had its year; the Emmys seem to be moving on. Denis Leary will probably be the chic "should win" choice for a lot of Emmy-watchers in the media but not around here.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Tony Shalhoub, Monk 7-2
Steve Carell, The Office 5-1
Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock 6-1
Ricky Gervais, Extras 20-1
Charlie Sheen, Two And A Half Men 40-1

I think we all learned a harsh lesson last year about counting Tony Shalhoub out because he's already won and nobody you know has ever watched his show. This year, I shall not be fooled. Though it seems like awarding anyone but Carell or Baldwin (or maybe Ricky Gervais) would be sheer lunacy -- not only have they given the best performances in the category but they're also the most Hollywoody of the two, which usually bodes well for a nominee. It should be Carell or Baldwin. You figure it probably will be Carell or Baldwin. To you I say: Doris Roberts. Brad Garrett. John Lithgow. David Hyde Pierce. Tyne Daly. You'd think the Emmys would get tired of honoring the same people every year. You would be wrong.
