MONDO EXTRAS
Tony, Tony, Tony
10:55: Okay, this computer-generated chorus line of Whoopis, with Mario Lopez at the front, is the freakiest thing I've seen all night. Make it stop make it stop make it stop!!!
10:58: Time for the final award: Best Musical. Why is this so important? Well, the last five shows to win Best Musical -- Spring Awakening, Jersey Boys, Spamalot, Avenue Q and Hairspray -- are all still running on Broadway, while many, many others have come and gone. So which of this year's four nominees will be stunt-casting its leads in 2013? In the Heights! Hurry, producers, get onstage; this show is ending in 60 seconds, with or without you! They finally get there, and after one of them makes a quick speech, a couple of others hoist creator/composer/star Lin-Manuel Miranda onto their shoulders. I've never seen a Tony winner look so completely shocked, thrilled, and maybe a little terrified, and I have to say, I kind of love it.
So that's our show! Better than I was expecting, in all honesty: a few high points, not many low points. It's nice to see Broadway come off looking decent on television. Even though I know that Monday night you'll all go back to the humiliating debacle of Legally Blonde the Musical: The Search for Elle Woods, and I'll go back to the tape to watch Carol Channing and LL Cool J 600 more times. And once I get paid for writing this? I'll probably blow it all on a Broadway show.
