MONDO EXTRAS

Ask A TV Critic: Alan Sepinwall

Sars: What's the one rave review (or pan) of a show that makes you cringe now?

Sepinwall: I loved the pilot of Jesse. Seriously.

Sars: So you're the one.

Sepinwall: I can't find [the review] right now, but I remember being really over the top in my praise of the show, the relationship between Applegate and her son, et cetera. I'm really mortified by it now. I was pleased to be one of the lone voices who said upfront that there were problems with Studio 60, though.

Sars: What's the most critically overpraised show you've seen in your tenure?

Sepinwall: I'd say Boomtown was aggressively mediocre, but it had the patina of a quality show, and so some critics got sucked in by it, despite all the horrid clichés flying every which way.

Sars: Which show's continued existence makes you despair?

Sepinwall: I would have said The Simple Life, but E! finally put it down. I had a thoroughly depressing conversation with an E! executive a summer or two ago where he told me that he hated Paris just as much as I did, but "You and I don't get it. We're too old. She's like a god to them [kids and teenagers], precisely because she doesn't do anything. They look at her and think, 'That could be me!'" With it gone, I guess I'd say According to Jim.

Sars: ...Wow. And: aw, now you're just kissing up to me.

Sepinwall: As a chubby guy with a hot wife, I have no problems with the existence of that genre. According to Jim just sucks.

Sars: Hey, no argument here. Speaking of suckage -- a couple of questions re: press tour.

Sepinwall: Go.
