MONDO EXTRAS

Ask A TV Critic: Verne Gay

Sars: ...Surreal Life?

Gay: No, it wasn't -- it'll come to me in a minute. But to me it was conspicuously camp, so I'm like, "Okay, it's pure camp, and it's not taking itself seriously, and it's fine, big deal." So I guess my answer is, there's nothing on that makes me despair. Maybe I've just gotten so used to so much that's so bad that --

Sars: You've developed a callus?

Gay: Yeah -- I've lost all my perspective. Or maybe I just have ignored the stuff that's really hideous and tried to pay attention to the stuff that intrigues me. I'm not sure what the answer is, but According to Jim...I'll go with you. That's certainly a pretty sad testament to --

Sars: They brought that back, and they're not bringing Knights of Prosperity back. I just don't understand how you look at those two shows and you're like, "I'm goin' with the Belushi." I don't get it!

Gay: I know.

Sars: I'm sure there were contractual reasons, I live in the world, but: no.

Gay: I know.

Sars: But let's try to end on an up note: can you recommend a show that you think people should check out, if they haven't already?

Gay: That they've never seen or that they should watch...

Sars: Our readers, there's not a lot of shows that nobody will have heard of.

Gay: I know! I'm talking to people who know, let me put it this way, a lot more about television than I do. I think one of the greatest shows is Extras; I love Extras, I think it's brilliant, it's one of the funniest shows on television that no one sees, and that of course is a Ricky Gervais show. Although I know it's been widely praised. I happen to like John from Cincinnati, I mean, I may be the only person in America that does.

Sars: No, there's one other guy.
