MONDO EXTRAS

Ask A TV Critic: Verne Gay

Gay: Yes. To me, your more off-brand reality shows, to me they're hard because the off-brand reality -- take Hell's Kitchen as an example, or Top Chef -- you really have to know and be invested in those shows, and again, if you do the one-and-done mentality, watch Top Chef once, then you're gonna really to catch up have to go to Television Without Pity to get the recap, and at that point, you know, it's too much. That's the problem with the off-brand, off-off-brand reality shows. But I'm with you: PBS. It's a safe haven -- no one's gonna ask you about the Frontline that you saw that Tuesday night, even though it was almost invariably excellent -- you know?

Sars: No one cares! You can watch American Experience, no one cares, no one's gonna ask you anything, it's not gonna be a controversial opinion; that's always quite relaxing.

Gay: I agree with you. That's exactly a place for me too.

Sars: Changing the subject slightly -- what show's continued existence just makes you despair? For the entire medium?

Gay: [laughs] Well, I know yours, Sarah.

Sars: Everybody knows mine.

Gay: Everyone knows yours. I would say...

Sars: You can pick a genre, but then you have to give me a specific example.

Gay: It's a great question. ...I sort of try to find something in everything, you know, I didn't mind Laguna Beach. I mean, one could say that that's the end of civilization, but in a way, I kinda got into it a couple seasons ago, even though it's not coming back -- I guess it's going to Newport Beach. To me that wasn't the worst thing on earth. One could argue that My Super Sweet Sixteen is an abomination, but it's supposed to be an abomination.

Sars: And it's very successful.
