Her workout cut short, Jane calls her boyfriend Curtis "Lem" Lemansky... uh sorry, I mean Matt Webb. He fills us in on what we've already assumed -- that she's in the process of weening herself off the tobaccy and is trying substitute that artificial high with the natural high of endorphins. "It's the first day, let's not go crazy here, okay," she replies curtly, hailing and then climbing in to a yellow cab. The driver is giving her static, yelling into a cell phone and lighting up a cigarette, and a classic New York argument ensues, which she resolves with a classic New York move: slamming her gun, then her badge against the glass divider. That shuts the cabbie up but good. "I don't think the gum's getting the whole job done," Lem -- Matt, I mean Matt! -- laughs on the other end of her call. I dunno, it sure looks like it got the job done just fine.

Aerial view of the NY streets. A car pulls up at a crime scene and stone-faced, black-suited detective climbs out. Walking inside, he greets his colleagues, detectives Reg Duffy (Brían F. O'Byrne) and Augie Blando (Tim Griffin) and they head upstairs to a blood-covered bedroom where a woman's body lies on the floor. They're joined by another familiar face, OZ and Fringe vet Kirk Acevdeo as Detective Luisito Calderon. They analyze the crime scene, establishing that the woman fought back "like Pacquiao" and that her kids were in the closet watching the whole thing go down. "That's gonna be fun," the lead cop mutters on his way out. Meanwhile, Blando is looking uncomfortable, though not because of the grisly sight in front of him. "I've gotta take such a dump," he tells Calderon, who looks positively thrilled to be gifted with that bit of knowledge.

Outside on the porch, family friend Curtis Hull is telling investigators how he found the woman's body. More expository details are laid out -- the husband is currently MIA and the nanny had a dentist's appointment, leaving the kids at home with their mom. On their way out, Blando joins them having completed his bit of extremely important business. "Nobody go in there for forty days or forty nights," he tells Calderon, who is clearly tired of being the guy that Blando always wants to shoot the crap with. [Rimshot.]

Police precinct. The detectives discuss the case while Jane glances over in their direction. They establish that the dead woman's husband is a thoracic surgeon and Blando wonders if that means he operates on dinosaurs. Having had about as much as she can take of this conversation, Timoney pipes up wanting to know how they got a case. Going to the whiteboard in front of the room, she points out that her name has been at the top of the list since last night, meaning that any case that comes in should be hers. "You see Jane," Blando begins in his best patronizing voice. "When a bad man does a murder and someone calls a police, the responding officer then will call his sergeant and then that sergeant will call a homicide detective. And I'm sorry, but that homicide detective was not you." Gotta give Cunningham credit there -- she handily summed up the workings of the police station and Timoney's status in it in just a handful of sentences. Now that's efficient exposition!
