Fall Pilot Season: Hawaii Five-0

The pair arrive at the house of the gunrunner Danny had asked for a wiretap on, whose name is Duran, and after Duran's pissed-off girlfriend rats out their presence to him, Duran shoots Danno in the arm and bolts. Steve chases him down, but when Duran takes a hostage, he gets the drop on Steve, until Danno shows up and shoots him in the head. So much for that lead. Searching the house for clues, Steve finds a teenage Chinese girl tied up in a closet and cuts her loose, realizing that Duran might have been the one who smuggled Hess into Hawaii. Danno waits for a "thank you" that never comes, then tells Steve that he's not going to take any risks that might take him away from his daughter, which is really something Steve should have thought about before he drafted him. Couldn't he find someone with fresh eyes and no kids? Words lead to shoves lead to Steve putting Danno in an arm lock, which leads to Danno punching Steve in the jaw. They don't like each other, just in case you didn't get the memo that came with this scene.

Back in the car, they bicker some more, and Steve apologizes. Danno says he'll let him know if he accepts it. They pay a visit to Chin Ho Kelly at Pearl Harbor, who could go talk to an old contact with connections to the human trafficking business, but the man won't talk to haolis. They ask him to join up with them, but Chin says he's out of the game, and an old accusation of taking bribes keeps him from getting back in. After asking Chin point-blank if he took the bribes, Steve offers him the job right there, and they head over to question his contact. After making Steve and Danno wear promotional T-shirts for his ice cream stand, the contact gives Chin a name -- Tsang Minh. Tsang might know where Hess is, but he won't talk to anyone he doesn't trust, and on an island as small as Oahu (which, granted, has a million people), "the bad guys know the good guys." They need a fresh face, not a cop. Preferably with fresh eyes, too.

Cut to a beach straight out of Burn Notice, packed with girls in bikinis and surfers shooting curls. The person they're looking for is both, Chin's cousin Kona Kalakaua, a former pro surfer turned cop who graduates from the academy in one week. Danno is instantly smitten, and we get the old "awkwardly long handshake" gag. Back at the McGarrett place, Steve shares info about the fingerprints and bootprint he found -- a Russian computer expert -- and the pair have a heart-to-heart over beers, talking about why they do what they do. Danno sees it as his job to keep his daughter's new home safe. They clink beers. Friends!
