Cut to the haoli, Detective Danny Williams (Scott Caan), sitting in a car outside a fancy gated house trying to get a warrant for a suspect in the McGarrett case. He gets off the phone in time to greet his daughter, who exits the gate carrying a new bunny in a cage -- a gift from her step-father. "Good ol' Step-Stan,"
Danno Danny says as he hides the giant stuffed bunny he bought her in the back seat. Awwww.
At the McGarrett house, Steve photographs bloody footprints and dusts for prints, which has strangely not been done yet, and is on the way out with a "Champ" toolbox his father mentioned on the phone, containing a tape recorder and a key, when
Danno Danny shows up and they have a brief, shouty stand-off. After they whip them out and compare -- their ID's, I mean -- Danny tells Steve to exit the crime scene, and leave the toolbox. Steve refuses, and Danny threatens to arrest him. With no recourse, Steve calls up the governor, takes the task force job, and is sworn in over the phone. Now it's his crime scene. Booyah! His triumphant exit loses its lustre when, after the commercials, he comes knocking at Danny's tiny apartment, asking about the wire tap he requested. Danny tells him the guy's name came up while he was tracing the bullet used, and Steve drafts him for the task force right there, because he's only been there six months and has "fresh eyes." Is Steve hitting on him?
IMPORTANT SCENE: Steve and Danny are in the car, and Danny's Psycho ringtone goes off. Figuring out that Danny hates his ex-wife, Steve is shocked to hear that Danny also hates the beach. "Who doesn't like the beach?" City boy Danny finally answers the phone, only to realize it's his daughter calling. After saying he'll see her that weekend, he signs off with "Danno loves you." Steve starts to ask about it, but
Danny Danno shuts him down. "Danno," Steve muses.
The pair arrive at the house of the gunrunner Danny had asked for a wiretap on, whose name is Duran, and after Duran's pissed-off girlfriend rats out their presence to him, Duran shoots Danno in the arm and bolts. Steve chases him down, but when Duran takes a hostage, he gets the drop on Steve, until Danno shows up and shoots him in the head. So much for that lead. Searching the house for clues, Steve finds a teenage Chinese girl tied up in a closet and cuts her loose, realizing that Duran might have been the one who smuggled Hess into Hawaii. Danno waits for a "thank you" that never comes, then tells Steve that he's not going to take any risks that might take him away from his daughter, which is really something Steve should have thought about before he drafted him. Couldn't he find someone with fresh eyes and no kids? Words lead to shoves lead to Steve putting Danno in an arm lock, which leads to Danno punching Steve in the jaw. They don't like each other, just in case you didn't get the memo that came with this scene.
