Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America

Vanessa heads in to work. A woman gets up in her face and asks if she works there. Vanessa says no, and leaves.

Secretary Reed gives a press conference and announces that they'll manufacture the vaccine if they can't get it from France. A reporter asks if he's talking about ignoring the patent, and Reed says that they'll do whatever it takes. As he walks away from the podium, he starts to look pale and sweaty. But he hasn't coughed yet! And that's the magic death sign!

Joely gets an urgent phone call from Local Chinese Doctor. He reports that one of their colleagues is following up some rumors in Africa that the virus has mutated again. She reports that entire villages are being wiped out.

Joely goes to tells Secretary Reed about the news, and says she's going to Angola herself to check it out. An aide says that Joely originally claimed that the flu virus would lessen with time. Joely says that the first wave is less lethal, but that this is a mutation. Reed wonders how they are going to handle this. Joely gives him a history lesson on the Spanish Flu to point out that the second wave could be even worse than what they've just been through.

In New York, Vanessa returns home. Curtis heard a rumor that the Guard might be cut loose soon, so he could go back to a regular job. Vanessa hands him a gift -- it's a baby name book. He immediately realizes what it means, and it quite happy about it. So is she.

The news reports that economic sanctions encouraged the French to give up their vaccine supply. Joely dons an astronaut suit to go visit Secretary Reed, who's not looking so hot. The irony! Joely says that she leaves for Africa in an hour, and Reed encourages her to get going, because he's going to be fine. He doesn't look fine. Joely looks sad, and leaves. She runs down the hallway and into a bathroom, where she starts sobbing uncontrollably. But it's there are no tears or anything, so it ends up looking really fake.

Richmond. Governor Max shows up for a photo op in Airplane Family's neighborhood. He thanks Airplane Mom for her work organizing the neighborhood, and announces that they've started a fund to help survivors of the flu, and would like to name it after Airplane Dad. He promises that they won't ever forget what happened. Especially not since it's about to happen all over again!

Joely heads to Angola by plane. She tells the other people on the plane with her that there's been a larger mortality rate in Angola, and that they don't know why, except that the villagers had weakened immune systems. One guy asks if their vaccinations will protect them, but Joely doesn't really know the answer. I'm going to say no, since it's mutated into a different strain by now. But if you're nervous about being exposed to disease, maybe this wasn't the trip to go on. Or maybe he shouldn't be working at the CDC.
