Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America

Airplane Mom is in the hospital waiting room with Airplane Daughter and Toby. They aren't being allowed in to see Airplane Dad. Joely comes out wearing a surgical mask and asks Airplane Mom to come with her, alone, and also adds that they'll need to get "a few samples." Okay, I think they would tell them a little more information than that. No need to be all Area 51 about it. Joely really is a drama queen. Joely silently tells Airplane Mom with her eyes that Airplane Dad is not in good shape, so Airplane Mom tells the kids to be calm and that she'll be right back. At least the kids aren't idiots, because as soon as Mom is gone, Toby says, "He's dead, isn't he?" Maybe they should let Toby and his sister figure out how to handle the situation with a minimum of unnecessary secrecy and drama. A report on a television nearby says that there's speculation that the bird flu is now being transferred from human to human.

Airplane Mom looks at her husband from a viewing room. Inside, her husband is on a respirator and is being treated by a bunch of astronauts. She asks what in the hell happened, and Joely won't spill it, because it's a fucking state secret or something. Airplane Mom wants to be with her husband, so Joely sends her off to be suited up. So they'll let Airplane Mom go into the room, but they won't inform her as to what she's potentially exposing herself to? Nice. Joely rips off her mask, all disgusted with the state of humanity or something, and calls Secretary Reed. Meanwhile, Airplane Mom dons an astronaut suit and goes in to see her husband, who's looking pretty bad. I mean, it's the flu. I realize that it kills a lot of people every year, but they've made the guy up to look like a zombie or something. Joely tells Secretary Reed that they've confirmed that an American has the H5N1 virus, and that there's no telling how many people he's had contact with. As Joely speaks, a HazMat team pulls up to the Airplane Family's house in the middle of the night, kind of like E.T. or something. Joely thinks the President needs to address the country immediately. Airplane Dad dies. Airplane Mom cries.

Secretary Reed holds a press conference to release information about the bird flu. He tells everyone not to panic, even though it's deadly, and there's no vaccine, and no cure, and they really don't have a governmental plan on how to deal with it. But everything's just fine! Really!

Richmond. Joely does an autopsy on Airplane Dad, and again, what will the autopsy tell them? That he died of the flu? I think they already know that information. I seriously think that they just want to show gross organs and stuff.
