The Tannest Teenagers In Tan-Teenageville

Later, Gabi and Troy meet up by the time clock, and he invites her out onto the golf course. For a minute, it seems like he wants to take her out there and ravish her, but of course, it's a picnic. I swear, Eric from Big Brother 8 moves faster than this, and I'm convinced he would remove a woman's bra by unfastening one hook per week for a month. The ensuing picnic involves moony eyes, feeding each other (with throwing of food rather than gentle and possibly too sexy feeding, of course), and the introduction of Troy's fear of the future, exemplified by his need for a scholarship in order to afford college. Gabi wants to concentrate on the here and now, because she likes the idea of staying put for the summer. They don't kiss, although this is more understandable than usual, because of his plaid shorts.

It turns out that Sharpay, accompanied by an increasingly disgruntled Ryan, is spying on them from...the tower of a papier-mache castle? It's like the Lava Springs golf course has been crossed with the Clubs-O-Fun mini-golf course. Sharpay rings up Fulton and complains that the fairway is "bone dry," so...you know. Turn on the sprinklers! Of course, the introduction of the sprinklers leads to a frolicking Troy and Gabi being doused with water right when they're about to kiss. So they still don't. Predictably, as Sharpay would know if she had ever watched a movie before, the water interrupts the actual kissing but only makes them frolic more. As much as I dislike the choreography in this series, I must say, watching Efron and La Hudge attempt improvisational frolicking with all the grace of...well, I was going to say "trained bears," but it's more like "untrained bears"...actually does make me miss the choreography. Sharpay tells Ryan to keep an eye on the lovebears -- er, "birds" -- swearing this is Evans "turf." It does turn out that Gabi and Troy were caught playing around on the golf course by Fulton, so they're in trouble -- mostly she is, for whatever reason. Dun-dun-duuuun!

Back from commercials, we are in the club kitchen again. Troy and Gabi stroll in, holding hands. They clock in and follow the sound of music to a room where Kelsi is practicing a little song. She tells them how excited she is about the talent show, where "the employees getta do a number" and everything! Looking even more orange than he does in the rest of the movie, Troy tells Kelsi not to count on him -- he stopped singing after the famous High School Musical. You may have heard of it. Gabi picks up a piece of music, and we learn that it's a song Kelsi has written for Gabi and Troy to sing. TOGETHER, Troy, you uncooperative jerk. Gabi wants to hear the song.
