The Tannest Teenagers In Tan-Teenageville

Troy makes his way to the kitchen full of people who hate him, but since they hate him, everyone is glaring at him while he tries to get some food. He gets into a big fight with FOT over the fact that FOT feels like he's a different guy, and Troy feels like he's just taking opportunities that are being handed to him. FOT ultimately spits that they nominated Troy for his awesomeness as a human being, and now he's gotten all un-awesome. FOT adds that they've known each other since preschool, and if he feels like he doesn't know Troy, then who does? WHO? I'm thinking Crayola, maybe. Fulton marches in and gets mad at all of them for this round of "Dr. Phil," so he orders them all back to work. FOT and Troy part on bad terms.

Later, Mama Evans bosses Taylor and Martha as they try to arrange flowers for...the talent show? Which isn't tonight, but is soon? I don't know. I'm kind of frustrated by the fact that I can successfully follow the plot of The Wire, while this makes me feel like I'm watching an un-subtitled show in Mandarin Chinese. Elsewhere, Sharpay excitedly tells Troy that her dad has arranged for the scholarship guys to be right up front. She then hustles him up on stage, where he stammers that he's new at all this and hopes she'll "take it easy." As she so often does. Predictably, this is where the fireworks start going off, and the music kicks up, and we are jolted into an uptempo retelling of the "You Are The Music In Me" "ballad." It's not a good song either fast or slow, but I think I like it this way even less. Troy looks terrified by the pyrotechnics and the Summer Beeyotches doing backup, but he keeps up anyway, having no problems following this song that he has apparently heard one time in a completely different style. The one thing I do think is funny is that Sharpay drags him over to the location of a wind effect at one point, and they have indeed arranged it so that the blowing of his hair and shirt looks a hell of a lot like stupid wind effects that really happen in far too many videos. And he looks very uncomfortable, which is great. This scene is like a great overacting contest, where Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale are having a contest to see whether it's more unbelievable that he would look so openly horrified by her presence or more unbelievable that she would be so completely oblivious to said open horror. As the man said in While You Were Sleeping: It's a toss-up.
