The Tannest Teenagers In Tan-Teenageville

In her dressing room, Sharpay sobs that her life is over. Fulton looks on and thinks to himself, "How I wish." He basically orders her to go on stage and rescue a lady who's now improvising with her sock puppet. Said lady and sock puppet are pretty bad, it must be said, based on the clip we are given. I think Troy's better than the lady; I'm not sure about the Hudge and the sock puppet. Troy enters Sharpay's dressing room and tells her that he'll sing with her, because he said he would. He also reminds her that "we're all in this together." God, please let that phrase die. It's like a long-cured illness -- you don't keep it alive in the laboratory if you don't have to, because all that happens is that it escapes. She wants to get out there with Troy, but he tells her that she has to let the Wildcats do their thing. She tells Troy she wishes he were doing it for her, and that he's a good guy. She likes him better than she likes herself. (Pause for Tisdale to ruin her own moment with an overacted gasp-take at the concept of liking anything more than she likes herself.)

Whispering spreads through the Wildcats, all relieved of wait-staffing. So nobody's getting any drinks, then. Just as Troy is about to go on, Ryan shoves a "new song" in his hands, telling him that Sharpay wanted him to learn it. Troy protests, but Kelsi hustles him off to teach it to him. Curious! Kelsi pulls Troy to the piano, where she starts to play the piano.

We fade to Fulton introducing Troy and Sharpay singing together. But Sharpay finds that Troy is nowhere to be found. When he finally shows up, he wants to know what's up with the song switch. She knows nothing of it. Curiouser! Ryan pats her on the shoulder and lets her know that she's been had, and then Troy is out on stage starting the song by himself. When a breathy female voice begins, Troy is surprised, and he looks around to see who it is. Where is she? He sings tentatively back to her. And then, in the back of the crowd, there is Gabi! Who has come back for...some reason. They sing at each other very, very intensely. And now the wind machine is being used unironically, which is too bad and kind of ruins the joke from earlier. Nice white suit, Efron. Did Travolta pass that down to you during the table read? Oh, by the way, apparently, the Wildcats and whatever they rehearsed have been forgotten, because this is a Troy-Gabi number. At one point during the number, he touches her nose. It's like that. And then they skip over to the piano. And I do mean "skip." I don't like "We're All In This Together" or anything, but it was better than this drippy thing.
