We're All In This Together. All Right

High School Musical

Gabi is in class when Sharpay stalks up and starts chirping at her, sniffing around about whether she knows Troy. Gabi "plays" dumb. She's not really paying attention anyway as Sharpay prattles on about Troy's single-minded devotion to basketball, because instead, she's watching with concern as the teacher makes a mistake in an equation on the board. When she points it out, the teacher initially refuses to believe it, but is forced to eat crow. I'm not sure what the point of that sequence is, except that the teacher is apparently bitchy and mean. And why is the teacher pregnant? Are pregnant ladies mean? Taylor, who likes to think of herself as the world's champion apple-polisher, looks at Gabi with a combination of suspicion and hunger. To hate her, or to recruit her into your web of evil? It is a complex calculus. She should consult Donald Rumsfeld, who has dealt with dilemmas like this many times, and who isn't busy.

Later, the lure of the auditions board has brought Troy back to the hallway. He stares at the signup sheet. He walks off. It turns out that Ryan was watching and saw the whole thing -- scandal! Ryan grabs a passing Sharpay and spills the beans that Troy was eyeballing the list. Dun-dun-dun! Sharpay is not happy about this, or about the "new girl" and her apparent influence. Frankly, at this point, the new girl doesn't look smart enough to influence a light switch to change from "off" to "on," so I'm not sure Sharpay has that much to worry about. Nevertheless, she runs off to give Gabi a righteous Googling. Basically, Sharpay learns that Gabi is a great big nerd whose trophy case is full of academic bling. Unfortunately, Sharpay's research is a little noisy, because the school apparently has one of those computers you see on television quite often that make a chirping noise as information comes up on the screen. Sharpay decides that she will make sure Gabi is sidetracked into proper nerd pursuits and doesn't interfere with her playing the lead in Gypsy or Equus or whatever.

Now, we are watching detention, where the drama queen is forcing everyone to do menial labor for the show. Taylor runs up to Gabi and tells her that "the answer is yes," and she can be on the academic decathlon team. It turns out that Sharpay put some of Gabi's nerd clippings in Taylor's locker, just to create this very situation. Gabi hesitates at the suggestion, perhaps because she has some sliver of social self-preservation, but Sharpay comes over and pushes her to be a joiner and such. Sharpay is sporting, by the way, a pink corset/camisole from Forever Hello Kitty.
