We're All In This Together. All Right

by Miss Alli August 17, 2007
High School Musical

Troy and his dad shoot hoops. Coach Dad doesn't understand why Troy is in detention. Troy wants to talk: "Hey, Dad...did you ever think about trying something new, but were afraid of what your friends might think?" Coach Dad misses the obvious, which is that Troy is telling him he wants to date guys, and tells Troy that he can "go left" without worry. Actually, maybe that's code, and maybe Coach Dad does get it. Troy clarifies that he's talking about something "really new" where your friends might "laugh at you." Coach Dad momentarily has a bead on the general problem as he offers up the "they're not really your friends" answer, but he makes it clear that your real friends are the guys on the basketball team, so that kind of ruins the moment, and Troy just sighs and goes back to practicing. It's a hard-knock life.

We find ourselves at the high school, where Sharpay is giving the DQ a bribe gift in anticipation of the auditions. When Ryan shows up, we see that he is wearing a pink beret, which come on, he's not Perez Hilton; you've made your point. Gabi and Troy exchange a goofy look. The DQ tells them she assumes they all know how to behave in homeroom now, and she announces that this morning will be the auditions for the you-what-icale. She says she'll be there until noon if you want to try out. Troy's buddy leans over to comment on how crazy the teacher is for wanting anyone to try out, like, we GET it, studly! You would never! Settle down! Later, in the hall, Friend Of Troy (his name is Chad, but he's Friend Of Troy to me by now) says they're all going to play some basketball during free period, and Troy stammers that he can't make it, because he's going to go learn to knit. Well, practically. He claims it's "homework," but you and I know the truth. THEATER! Friend Of Troy hassles him about it, but Troy persists in begging off, and then he persists in running off. Good for him. Be a man by being a girl! Friend Of Troy tries to follow, but he takes a wrong turn, and when he's looking for Troy in a classroom, Troy is sneaking behind him. Troy barely evades Coach Dad near a set of double doors, and then he sneaks through the auto shop and heads into the auditorium hiding behind a janitor's cart. He skulks around backstage, finally spotting the DQ and a bunch of auditioners, including Sharpay and Ryan. The DQ gives a speech about theater, and then a speech about strict time limits. The geeky girl who wrote the show will also be the accompanist.
