Inside the Osmonds

Ma tells Pa (who is doing the most ineffective sit-ups ever on the floor) that Jimmy got beat up at school because he wouldn't "smoke drugs" with some other kids. Yeah, from what we've seen of Jimmy, I'm so sure that's why he got beat up. It had nothing to do with the fact that he's an obnoxious little brat. Ma brings up Marie's problem, and says that L.A. is "no place to raise children." Um, aren't most of her children technically adults at this point? Marie has to be in her late teens, anyway. Pa says they have to be where the work is. Ma wishes the work was in Utah.

At a family meeting, Alan tells everyone that they want to build a television and recording studio in Utah, and produce the Donny and Marie show from there, as well as movies and specials. It's going to cost $40 million, but the family's net worth is twice that. Wayne thinks it sounds risky. Marie feels more at home in California. One of the deaf sons wants to know what the worst-case scenario is. Alan admits that the studio could go under. Jay says that they'd still have half their net worth. Pa wants to know what Donny thinks. Donny is okay with it as long as he can record there. Marie looks upset that Donny didn't take her side. They take a vote, and decide to build the studio.

News montage tells us that it's 1977. We see file photos of the studio being constructed while we listen to a song that I think is called "Going Back to Utah." Merrill (now sporting a moustache) gives Leisure Suit Record Mogul and some other guy a tour of the new studio and details all of the opulence. I don't think this is going to go well. LSRM calls it "Osmondia."

Backstage, Marie is looking for Donny who runs up. She accuses him of waiting until the last second in order to drive her crazy. They bicker. Onstage, Donny plays a magician who puts Marie in a box and then cuts her open. Except after he does the part where he slides her torso section away from her head section and leg section, he runs off stage, leaving her to sing "Paper Roses" from inside the box. I don't think that was in the script, based on Alan getting pissed in the control room. Alan confronts Donny backstage, telling him not to take out his anger on Marie. Donny looks sad. After, Marie is in her dressing room and Donny tries to apologize. Donny says that it was a bad joke, and that it's not easy for him to "play a clown every week." Marie wonders if Donny even cares how she feels, and it's not her dream job either, and she's under the same pressures as him, and they need to stick together. Donny apologizes again and they hug.
