Jack
Jack and Ron sit on the front porch of the Berka house. Jack talks to Ron about his fantasies of being grown up and protecting Mrs. Berka from Mr. Berka. Max joins them on the porch, and Ron invites the two of them to a brunch he and the Bob are having that weekend. Once again, he dangles the presence of Maggie as an inducement to come. Jack is on to him, though, and tells Ron it's not worth it if she'll only be there for five minutes. But Ron promises that she'll be there for the entire party. Jack: "That's not fair. That's flat-out bribery." But he caves, and agrees to come. Brunch at the high-rise. Max is at the buffet when a woman approaches him and says, "You must be Jack. You look just like your father." Just as Max is correcting her, he notices Jack and Maggie sneaking out and abandoning him. Maggie and Jack are sitting on a bench outside the lobby of the high-rise. She tells him that she hates her dad's boyfriend: "He clips his toenails and then he eats the pieces." Just, ew. I think I need to go to my Michael Ontkean/Harry Hamlin happy place for a minute. Jack asks Maggie if he can kiss her. Maggie: "No." Jack asks why not. She tells him that it's because he kisses everyone. She saw him kiss that other girl during the fire drill. When he mentions the kiss from the other day, she tells him that was only because he was injured. Maggie wonders if Max is okay, and they go back inside to find him. They find Max in the stairwell of the building, throwing up down the garbage chute. Maggie offers to get some seltzer. After she leaves, Max takes a bottle of clear liquor out of his pocket and knocks back a slug. Jack is worried. "Why do I feel like I'm seeing tomorrow's headlines? 'Teenager dies at homosexual brunch.'" Is there any other kind, darling? Jack accuses Max of being pathetic, and Max tells him to leave him alone. Jack tells Max "your life is a complete mess, but you don't have to make it a bigger drama than it already is." Max earns even more of my affection when he tells Jack, "Look who's talking, okay?" Max tells Jack about the hell that it is to live with his parents, and how guilty he feels for hating them both. Jack: "I've already watched my whole family fall apart, and the truth is, I thought your family was the perfect family. Now look, both our families are nuts." Max responds by spewing down the trash chute again. Just at that moment, Maggie returns with the Bob. Jack is on the patio, dialing a phone. A cordless phone. I call anachronism! Jack's calling Stockard to tell her that he and Max are going to spend the night at Ron's.
