Court of No Appeal

L.A. Law: The Movie

Arnie runs into slinky Chloe in the file room, sorting through folders. She offers her condolences for Dave's death. The she enquires about whether they'll be working together again. Arnie asks Chloe why she would want to work for a "bitter old man." Chloe doesn't know what he means. Arnie admits to her that when he said he wanted to work with her, what he really wanted was to have sex with her. Off-screen, a sudden chill runs down Douglas's spine. But now that Dave has died, Arnie realizes that he was wrong and wants to start over from scratch with Chloe. Chloe smiles and agrees, then asks, "How about we work together?" Arnie turns her down. Heh.

Elsewhere, Jason sorts through some other files. Douglas comes in to give a fixie-fixie speech to his son. Douglas is proud of Jason and admits that he wanted Jason to take after him because it would validate the type of lawyer Douglas is. Jason admits that, despite his rant earlier, he actually does want to be like Douglas. Whatever. This is so boring that I don't care about the sudden, inexplicable changes of personality brought on by a supporting character's death. Douglas tells Jason that he needs to get to the courthouse for Michael's hearing.

Roxanne's office. Ann and Stuart interrupt her to tell her that she didn't have to come in to work, given Dave's death and all. They're there to give Roxanne the money that Dave gave them. Roxanne insists that they keep it; Dave left Roxanne and Maddie plenty of money. He also left Benny a trust and the contents of his warehouses. This is Benny's cue to come in to deliver the mail. He's wearing a pair of wax lips! Ha ha cough. Their conversation is interrupted by a call to Stuart's cell phone. It's Belinda. Stuart tells her he'll be right over.

Ugly courthouse. Michael is interrogating Diebenkorn. Michael asks Diebenkorn if he knows Belinda. Diebenkorn lies that he doesn't. Michael asks if he ever coached her to take the stand to testify against Albert. Diebenkorn insists that he didn't. Michael asks if Diebenkorn instructed Belinda to lie. Grace objects. Sustained. Stuart and Jason enter the gallery as Michael explains that he's about to play an audiotape and wants Diebenkorn to identify the voices on it. Grace objects. Michael insists that this evidence will help clear his client, and begs the court to let him play it. The judge allows it. Michael plays the tape, which is Belinda's recording of her blackmailing Diebenkorn. Diebenkorn insists that he doesn't recognize the voices on the tape. Grace tries to object, but it's obvious that she recognizes Diebenkorn's voice on the tape. The judge allows it to continue. On the tape, Belinda threatens to testify against Diebenkorn, who threatened to have Belinda's child taken away if she didn't lie on the stand about what she saw. She works as a prostitute and Social Services hasn't taken her kid away already? The gallery buzzes with conversation. The judge calls for order. Grace sits there, gobsmacked. Diebenkorn insists that it's not him on the tape. Michael ends his questioning and calls Belinda to the stand.
