MONDO EXTRAS

Little House On The Prairie: “A Matter Of Faith”

Doc Baker examines Toby, the boy who fell from the loft, and announces that Toby has a slight concussion and a sprained elbow. Toby's mother invites Doc Baker to stay for supper, but he says that he should go out and finish his rounds. Toby's father enters and says that a storm is coming, and what with Doc Baker having a squeaky wheel and all, he should stay put. Oh, so the squeaky wheel was important in the end. The rain is already falling and some thunder booms. Doc Baker agrees to stick around.

As the rain pours down, Ma continues cooking. She looks like she doesn't feel so hot, but manages to pour herself some tea. Then she does something really scary – she takes the pins out of her hair. When do you ever see Ma with her hair down? Even in bed, she wears it in a braid. Creepy. As she waits for her tea to steep, she hears a cow mooing outside. She looks out the window and sees that the cow is out of the barn. And what in the hell is up with that cow? Do they not feed it? Its ribs are practically poking out of its hide! Ma puts a shawl on, runs out into the rain, and tries to pull the cow back into the barn. The cow pulls back. I would tell the cow to fuck right off. A little rain won't hurt it. In the struggle, Ma's shawl falls off, and she gets woozy. And then she falls, right in a giant puddle! And there's thunder and lightning! And the cow totally doesn't even care! And then we zoom out as we see Ma lying on the ground in the mud and the cow totally walks back into the barn on its own. I don't know if the cow thing was planned, but it was pretty awesome.

Some undetermined amount of time later, Ma wakes up. It's still dark out and it's still raining, so it can't be much later. The soundtrack is very dramatic as Ma struggles to her feet and makes the long walk back to the house. We even get a few glimpses of Ma-vision, which is blurry and unsteady. All the pies are still out on the shelves. How are they not getting wet? Anyway, Ma makes it back to the house and stands by the fire to get warm. She dries off with a towel and removes her skirt! This is like porno Little House! But it was mostly just so that we could see that her bread poultice and bandage have fallen away, and her cut is looking red and angry.

Meanwhile, Pa is cooking up food over the fire as the rain starts. Pa and the girls huddle under the wagon and Pa serves up some food. Pa thinks that Ma must be having the time of her life in "a nice, cozy house."

Cut to Ma, who is sweating like there's no tomorrow, and also having fever dreams or convulsions or something. She wakes with a start and cries out for Charles. Then she gets up and climbs up the ladder to the loft, only to find that the girls aren't there. Have I mentioned how creepy it is to see Ma with her hair down? Because it's creepier than the sweat or convulsions. Also, I think Ma is sleeping in Pa's nightshirt. Ma goes over to the stove and tosses in some newspaper. It's kind of weird that, two seconds ago, she was sweating her ass off, and now she's cold. Or it could be that the whole newspaper thing was just a ruse for the next part: as Ma crumples the newspaper, she sees the article Pa was reading about the Springfield family being robbed. And then the doorknob kind of clunks. And then the lightning and thunder starts up, and they alternate shots of the roof with extreme close-up shots of Ma's eyeball, and it's actually quite scary. This is the part where, if this were a movie, the phone would ring and someone would say, "You haven't checked the children yet." But instead, Ma grabs the key and locks the door, and then cries a little bit, but we don't judge her, because we would cry, too. As Ma walks across the floor, she limps a little bit, like she just remembered about her leg. She checks the injury, but we don't see it. We only see her reaction, which looks pretty alarmed, and scared. And then she uses a poker to stir up the fire a little. As you do when you think your leg might be about to fall off.
