MONDO EXTRAS

Spring Break Bug Attack

Locusts

As she hangs up, Xena sees General Jackass and runs after him. He asks what she wants, and she tells him that she needs to see Peter. He tells her to take it up with the FBI, but she lets him know that she knows Peter is at Fort Douglas, and she guilts him into helping her out. He tells her to come with him.

Fort Douglas. Xena has just gotten the news about the plan to use the VX nerve gas, and she thinks that everyone has gone crazy. Xena runs down the list of symptoms caused by VX gas -- I suspect she could have started and ended the list with the fact that it causes death within minutes, but if she's really worried about having convulsions during those few minutes, who am I to stop her? Maybe Moonsuit Guy tells her that the plan is to spray the gas at altitude, so that by the time it reaches humans on the ground it will be so dissipated that it will only kill five to ten percent of the people in the area. Whatever. Is there anyone in the world who doesn't think this is a moronic idea? If you're that person, you can watch the scene for yourself to hear the pro and con arguments. Peter tells Xena that the plan is to run a field trial with the gas. General Jackass lets Xena know that the President has already authorized them to use the gas on the swarm that's over Ohio. As everyone walks away, Xena tries to play on Peter's guilt at being a bad father by pointing out that there are a lot of kids in Ohio who will die.

Six farmers are bringing in the crop by hand in central Ohio when the swarm shows up. They run. End of scene.

At B.J.'s farm in Vernon, Indiana, they're just bringing in some corn. I guess B.J. has a radio on his tractor, because we hear news of swarms of locusts ravaging Tennessee and Kentucky. Apparently there have been some human fatalities, although we don't hear if those fatalities were caused by locust bites or by clumsy children falling onto skateboards. B.J. calls out to his farm hands to tell them that if they keep working hard, they'll get the entire crop in on time.

Back at the Air Force base, a couple of mechanics wearing gas masks attach a canister full of nerve gas to the underside of a helicopter. A black SUV pulls up, and General Jackass, Peter, and Maybe Moonsuit Guy exit and are handed gas masks by a soldier. Xena is still in the SUV, and she pulls out her cell phone and starts dialing. That's some nice security they have at this top secret bioweapons base. Xena has somehow reached a cable news network on her phone. Was that number on her speed dial? She asks for the national desk.
