Oscars 2008: Predictions

Episode Report Card
Joe R: A+ | Grade It Now!
YOU GRADE IT
Should Win: Norbit

Best Costume Design
Across The Universe
Atonement
Elizabeth: The Golden Age
La Vie En Rose
Sweeney Todd

Should Win: Scratch Elizabeth for gaudiness, Across the Universe and Sweeney for being derivative, and La Vie En Rose for being in service to a crappy final product. Hello, Atonement!

Will Win: I believe it was Roger Ebert who once observed that when you're trying to handicap the tech categories at the Oscars, know that very often "best" is confused for "most." Under that rule, you'd expect Elizabeth to take it home. But everybody keeps talking about that green dress in Atonement. Flip a coin and call it for...Atonement.

Best Editing
The Bourne Ultimatum
The Diving Bell And The Butterfly
Into The Wild
No Country For Old Men
There Will Be Blood

Should Win: I have a hard time choosing between Diving Bell and No Country here, because the pacing was so essential to the respective success of those films. You can't beat that heart-stopping suspense in No Country, though.

Will Win: Call it for No Country For Old Men as a way to pad the trophy total for the presumptive Best Picture winner. Plus, how cool would it be to see the Coens' pseudonym "Roderick Jaynes" called to the podium?

Best Makeup
La Vie En Rose
Norbit
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Should Win: Wow. I...I abstain. That's all I can say. Two of the worst movies I saw last year, plus one that looked so bad that I refused to see it under my "No Eddie Murphy in fat suits" rule. Of course, the reasons Pirates 3 sucked had nothing to do with the makeup, so: At World's End.

Will Win: La Vie En Rose. It'll allow the Academy to honor an art movie in a category where they usually have to hold their noses.

Best Original Song
Once ("Falling Slowly")
Enchanted ("Happy Working Song")
Enchanted ("So Close")
Enchanted ("That's How You Know")
August Rush ("Raise It Up")

Should Win: "Falling Slowly." It's so deserving of the award, in fact, that they tried (unsuccessfully) to get it declared ineligible last week.

Will Win: Anything but "Falling Slowly." Seriously. In all my years following the Oscars, the actual best song in the category has won a grand total of once (Eminem's "Lose Yourself," in case you were wondering). There's just no way this happens for a movie that I guarantee more than half of the old-man-heavy Academy has not seen. Say "That's How You Know," the more heavily touted Enchanted song, for the win. Though don't count out August Rush.
