I'm The Man In The Box

Profit: Pilot

Pete's avatar. Boom! Gone. Screw Parker Lewis, Profit is the one who actually can't lose.

Profit's office. Lackey has found Profit's Dad (without knowing who he is, natch. Lackeys don't need information. Just to get their timecards signed every Friday and a pat on the head.) He's in some nursing home in a burn unit. Profit looks like he could kiss Lackey. Somehow methinks Lackey would enjoy it.

Adultery Houseboat. Joanne and Jack talk on speakerphone to an investigator -- a total That Guy!, but I can't find his name. He's out in the woods where Profit grew up, talking on a giant phone, this one more WWI than II even, the whole separate box hanging from his shoulder. Seriously, homie could call in some artillery strikes with that thing. He also wears gloves, the motif continuing. He discovered that Dad was bad and raised him in some peculiar ways after his first wife died -- the investigator picks up an axe and idly chops some wood. Chopping wood isn't really an activity you oft see done "idly." Also: heh, "wood." J & J were really more interested in hearing about MamaProfit. Jack tries to cut the investigator off, but Joanne wants to hear. Investigator talks about how Profit's dad was cheap and wouldn't hire help: he just stuck Profit in a big ol' moving box and threw food in and cleaned it out once a week, like he did with his horses. Okay, so what's wrong with that? Kids love boxes. Boxes are super-fun. He goes on to describe how there was a hole cut out of the box so that the kid could watch TV. (This is INTERCUT with Profit getting on the elevator at the office.) Investigator can't imagine raising a kid solely on television. Yeah, and also back then in the woods, they couldn't have received more than two or three channels, tops. Maybe a few UHF ones. Investigator tells a story about how things got no better after Mama came, and one night, a few years before the fire, Bad Dad got drunk and carved a cross in the back of Profit's hand with a knife. Ouch. That's going to leave a mark. Joanne asks which hand. Right. And we see Profit annoyedly hitting the elevator button without his glove; indeed, there is a cross on his hand. Joanne puts two and two together. Smart cookie. Although your deduction would have been a whole lot easier if you were just watching the episode like I am.

Mama watches The Three Stooges. She gets a phone call from Gail (Profit coaching her) pretending to be from the nursing home, saying that her burny husband had an aneurysm and might not last the day. "I'm on my way," she drawls.
