Profit: Pilot

Day. G&G. Gail readies Profit for his meeting with Chaz, in which it's widely assumed that he'll be named the next President of Acquisitions. He voice-overs that he's glad Gail has realized the nature of business -- about the importance of adaptability. He's led into Chaz's office. Chaz has clearly lied about his ass-kicking at the hands of Pete, saying instead that he fell off a rock while fishing. Chaz brings Profit a drink and announces that Profit is about to be promoted to Sr. VP of Acquisitions. Ooh. Profit's face drops just the tiniest bit; he takes the drink. Chaz is giving Jack the Presidency back. What? Jack walks in. Chaz announces that Jack has come up with a great idea to smooth over the baby-food fiasco. The idea (which I believe Profit talked about earlier) involves a new company that wouldn't work with G&G unless Jack was reinstated. Profit voice-overs that Chaz hates Jack, but he loves money.

Night. Company celebration. Profit stands in his new office. Jack approaches. Profit plays it totally straight, revealing nothing about the nursing home, of course. He asks Jack why he came back to the company -- why he didn't pursue other offers. Jack says that there are "problems" here that he wants to solve. He goes on to talk about the "greatest threat" to a company being when you see a problem and look the other way. Jack brings up Wayne Gresham and asks if Profit ever met the guy. He says no. Jack brings up Profit's Daddy (just naming him, not saying that the man is Profit's father -- but now they're just splitting hairs, since they both know the other knows...) dying of a heart attack. For a second, Profit acts surprised that Jack know (why?)...but covers, asking calmly if Jack thinks "there might be a connection" between Wayne and...this other guy. Why is Profit surprised? He saw them chasing him through the halls, right? Or is he playing surprised? Jack says he knows there's a connection. Profit smiles and says he looks forward to working with him. Jack then says that he talked to Chaz about Profit's promotion, and that they're going to have to "put a hold on that" for the time being. Jack says that he shouldn't worry, though -- he's got his eye on Profit. Profit smiles tightly and leaves. I guess Profit can lose. Also: why would you put yourself on the target for a guy who has killed twice already? Jack must hate living with DrunkwhoreWife so much, he's suicidal.

Outside G&G. Joanne walks stridently. Profit stops her and invites her out for a drink. She says no, and that she finds it hard to look at him sometimes. Profit asks if it's because he reminds her of her sister. That gets Joanne's attention. He says he hears she's doing really well at the institution and is about to get out; he says Joanne must have mixed feeling about that after what she did to Joanne. Yikes. Profit points a be-gloved hand and says that we must always remember to forgive: "You can't run from your past. And you can't run from yourself." Joanne then get kissing-close to him and growls, "And you can't run from me, you sonofabitch." Profit smiles. Joanne gets into her car.
