Something The Lord Made

Something The Lord Made

Blalock and the surgical team emerge from the OR to find dozens of doctors clapping and cheering; Head Freak is cheering loudest of all. Somewhere in the crush, Blalock finds the Saxons to give them the news, and then hugs Mary. No sign of Viv at all in the celebration. I mean, what, did they make him stay and clean the OR? Or was he required to use a separate exit? Because there is no way he wouldn't have walked through that crowd to leave.

Sometime later, Blalock is walking down a corridor in the hospital. He overhears a couple of docs praising the surgery, and he smiles faintly, but then he hears one of them saying, "He was lucky to have that nigger in there with him." Blalock stops, and you can just see the self-doubt cross his face again. Once again, Blalock is an ass for not confronting those shitheads, but that was some nice acting from Rickman. Blalock walks into the lab, where Viv is sitting with one of the dogs. "You did well in there, Viv," says Blalock. Viv thanks him and, after a few seconds, tells him, "You performed an excellent surgery, doctor." Arrogance wins out, as Blalock says, "Yes, I think I did." They share a smile before Blalock walks out.

A woman carries a baby into the clinic, and we find Helen confronting a room full of mothers with blue babies, all wanting the surgery. Helen calms them down and tells them that if they go to administration, they will be worked into Blalock's schedule as soon as possible. For no reason at all, Viv walks through the room, carrying several test tubes.

We then cut to the OR, where Blalock is performing another operation, again with Viv standing over his shoulder to guide him. After the surgery, Blalock is greeted by some foreign doctors who were there to observe. Helen joins them and congratulates both Blalock and Viv on the work. Blalock introduces the foreign docs (a Swede and a Russian) to Helen and Viv. The Swede makes the mistake of addressing Viv as "Dr. Thomas." Viv tells him to call him Mr. Thomas, and the Swede is surprised to learn that Viv is not a doctor. Viv: "Oh no, I just work here with Dr. Blalock."

Outside the hospital, a photographer is calling for all of the doctors who participated in the surgery to line up for a picture. As Blalock walks up, Viv is telling him about a promising candidate for the surgery. Blalock, Helen, Dr. Pork, and two other white doctors line up for the picture. Blalock pulls Helen in from the edge of the group to stand in the center, next to him. Viv watches them line up, and then starts to walk away. The photographer then calls for just a picture of Blalock alone. Viv continues to look back at the scene as he walks away.
