Something The Lord Made

Viv and Clara are looking at Life magazine, with a picture of Blalock on the cover. Clara says, "Just 'cause you're not in the news doesn't mean you weren't there, Viv." But he is clearly troubled.

An outside shot of the Belvedere Hotel. Viv is wearing a tux, and he walks up to some suitcases left in front of the hotel by a white couple, picks up two of their bags, and follows a bell hop into the hotel. The bell hop is perplexed, but doesn't say a word. Viv puts down the suitcases and then walks, with his head down, toward the ballroom where a dinner is being given in Blalock's honor. Viv has entered through the kitchen, and is strapping on a waiter's apron. He positions himself behind some palm fronds just as Blalock begins his speech. Blalock starts by thanking his colleagues, by name, and never mentions Viv. (Helen is still listening to her iPod -- perhaps a little Debussy for a formal event?) The look on Viv's face is heartbreaking, and he doesn't stick around to listen to the rest of the speech. We see him walking up to his apartment house, where he drops his tuxedo tie and jacket into the trash.

Viv is in the lab, packing up his stuff, when Blalock walks up to him with a letter in his hand. Blalock: "What the hell is this?" Viv is resigning, and when Blalock asks him what will become of their work, Viv points out that Blalock has all those other people to help him. It comes out that Viv heard Blalock's speech at the Belvedere. Blalock asks Viv if this is all about getting respect from the power elite, and Viv tells him it is not about them, it's about Blalock. Blalock (ass) points out all the things he's done to fight for Viv, and then asks, "Is this any way to show your gratitude?" Viv: "I don't know. You tell me, doctor." Blalock goes on to tell Viv to be proud of his achievements, but he's unable to thank him or to admit how much he owes to Viv. And so Viv walks out.

Cut to an exterior shot of Morgan College, a historically black college in the University of Maryland system. ["How about that! I looked something up! These books behind me don't just make the office look good, they're filled with useful legal tidbits just like that!" -- the original law-talkin' guy] Viv is inside, speaking to someone from Admissions about his request to be given credit for a number of courses, all corresponding to the work he has done as Blalock's technician. He offers to take the exams in all of those courses, but the Admissions dude is not hearing it. If Viv wants a degree, he will have start at the beginning, as a freshman. But Viv has a family to support, and can't spend four years getting a degree. And he still wants some recognition for the work that he did. So again, he walks out.
