Det. Adams gets to her house. There are ants everywhere. Her mom, who we don't get to see, yells that there was a dead cockroach and they just swarmed. Dun dun dun.
At the station, there's a quick shot of Mad Men guy writing "RIP" next to a picture of the shooter that Ben took down, as Zig Zag walks by and sees it.
Det. Adams is back on the scene, she's checking out those mystery ants, who lead not to kiddie porn's house, but to the house next door. But she gets knocked out before she can call for help. She wakes up inside the house of Arsham, the helpful guy from before. He's got her gun and he's crying. He didn't mean to hurt the little girl, it was an accident, she started screaming and he smothered her to shut her up. While he's confessing, Det. Adams takes the gun away from him and then cuffs him. Billy could learn a lesson from her. She calls for backup, and heads into Arsham's house and opens a closet where she finds the dead girl. (Though we're not shown the body... thankfully). She looks appalled. Arsham's mother walks in and starts screaming/crying.
Ben goes to the hospital to check on Billy. He ends up sitting next to the teenage girl, the one who formerly owned the pink phone. Is there only one hospital in all of South LA? And if so, is it really this eerily quiet? Anyway, girl is reading Beloved and Ben strikes up conversation and tells her that he likes that book as he read it for a black studies class. She tells him that her brother got shot, but they say he'll be okay. He asks if he can do anything or check with anyone for her. Instead of walking away from the chatty older male stranger, she asks if he's a cop, because he has that haircut. He was hoping it was because he looked mean. It's sorta sweet that these stories intersected, even though they never realize that he killed a guy who shot her brother. It's actually better that they don't bring that up. Slightly more subtle.
That song "The Fake Empire" starts playing, as we see Moretta checking in on his family. Bryant goes home to his wife and dog and curls up next to her and starts making out with her. The dog watches. Det. Adams walks back into the ant-infested kitchen and tells her mother that she's home, she had to go back to get something she left at work. Tells her mom to go back to sleep because it is early. She's got a band-aid on her head. John walks into a bar and starts drinking and commiserates with the guy that got arrested for working the bushes. It seems like he's in a gay bar, or there's coincidentally just a lot of really attractive, young, muscled guys there and not a single woman. Interesting twist. The mom comes and covers up her daughter, while Ben looks at his daily book. Cooper wrote that he did his duties to the highest standard and that they'll be lucky if he sticks with it.
