The Growing Pains Reunion Movie

The Growing Pains Reunion Movie

Chrissy is all grown up too -- she's seventeen and smoking in the girls' bathroom at school while an announcement tells us that she is "leading the honor roll for the class of 2001." A teacher busts her, and Chrissy gripes about the pressures of getting good grades. In other words, she combines Carol's smarts with Mike's excuse making.

Jason, meanwhile, has been practicing psychiatry in DC as well as writing mystery novels. He was always my least favorite character on the show.

Voice-over blessedly over, for now. Mike and Carol are meeting with Jason in a sports bar. Mike and Carol arrive first. Mike teases Carol about her lack of dates, and they get into a popcorn fight. If Kirk Cameron were wearing suspenders, this could be a scene from the original series. Jason shows up and explains that it's his and Maggie's thirtieth anniversary on Thanksgiving weekend. His publisher offered him a villa in Hilton Head, and he wants the kids to sneak down there and surprise Maggie. Mike and Carol are both "too busy" with work, as evidenced by their both leaving the table to make cell-phone calls.

Maggie's boss, Mac Robinson, is having a photo op in his office. Maggie arrives with the suspended-from-school Chrissy in tow. Mac offers Chrissy a chance to watch a Spice Girls DVD in his office to get her out of the room. The other guy, Scott, tells Maggie that she's fired because she says "um" too much on camera. You can tell by the way he is firing her (and the sad music that is playing) that he's really not a bad person. This will be important later.

Back at the sports bar, Mike asks after "Benny." Jason milks the dot-com joke. It's still not funny. Jason admits that Ben's business is not doing so well, but Maggie is doing great. Carol says that Maggie lacks follow-through. Mike is happy that his wife stays home with their kids, which is a clunky way of revealing that Mike and Kate have children. Jason's cell phone rings, and it's Maggie giving him her bad news. Mike and Carol agree to come to Hilton Head out of guilt.

In Hilton Head, Maggie and Jason are golfing. Some random woman passes by in her own golf cart and stops to watch Maggie's next shot, commenting, "She must have been quite the athlete when she was young." Whatever, golf cart bitch. What are you doing driving the wrong way down the fairway, anyway? Maggie flubs the shot and grumbles about how mediocre she is. Jason reminds her that they are there to celebrate "thirty years of being happy together."
