At the table, Gaius asks Merlin about his powers, which seem instinctual. Merlin asks him if he ever studied magic, and Gaius dodges the question by saying that Uthur banned it 20 years ago, because it was being used for the wrong reasons. He also revealed that Uthur didn't kill all the dragons, he kept one as an example, imprisoned in a cave beneath the castle. He then asks Merlin to bring Lady Helen an elixir for her voice. At Lady Helen's chamber, Merlin finds a straw voodoo doll and a book of spells. He hides what he was doing just as she comes back and gives her the elixir. We get a flash of Old Lady Collins in a mirror, and Merlin leaves.
During the commercials, we get to see a scene from Harry Potter: The Half-Blood Prince. I'm sorry, I just don't see the connection here. Zero crossover. Just kidding, the scene has young Voldemort explaining that he can move things with his mind, and it was clearly chosen for its connection to this show. Good, because more people need to see Harry Potter.
Strolling through town, Merlin walks right by Arthur and his gang, and Arthur talks some smack. Merlin gets in the great line, "I knew you were an ass, I just didn't know you were a royal one," and pretty much challenges Arthur to a one-on-one fight. Arthur takes off his jacket, which seems silly, since Arthur is wearing little pieces of armor on his shirt, and Arthur tosses him a flail. They're gonna have a flail fight? Arthur quickly gets the advantage in open quarters, but when he backs Merlin into the closeness of a stall, Merlin starts using his powers to trip Arthur up. He pretty much has the thing won when Gaius shows up, and Merlin is distracted long enough for Arthur to beat him up with a broom, which I'm pretty sure is cheating in a flail fight. (It's been a while.) Arthur's goons pick him up, and Arthur calls him brave. If this were a Smallville recap, I'd call this the Gayest Look of the Episode. Apologies to Omar G. "There's something about you, Merlin," says Arthur, "and I can't quite put my finger on it." They should totally have called this show There's Something About Merlin.
Gaius cusses out Merlin, and Merlin says if he can't use magic, he might as well be dead and runs off to his room. Gaius comes up with soap and water to clean up his injuries, and tells him to take his shirt off. Merlin asks if he's a monster. Gaius says no, but that maybe there's someone more knowledgeable about these things. He then gives Merlin a shot of something for the pain. Is he trying to get shirtless Merlin drunk?
