MONDO EXTRAS

Oh, Those Wacky Muslims

by Kim February 26, 2001
The Princess & the Marine

Agents escort Meriam into an office where they tell her that her "little stunt" almost caused an international incident, and that she could have "destabilized the entire Gulf." Yeah! Take that! I really don't like Meriam. I know I'm supposed to, but I think she's a spoiled little brat. Female Agent says that Meriam's dad called the police, and the police called them. Female Agent tells Meriam that they're invoking "expedited removal" which means "no lawyer, no judge" and Meriam's on the next plane home. Female Agent tells Meriam that Zack works for the government and the government wants her gone, so Zack can't save her. They escort Meriam out to wait for her flight. Just then, some guy named Jim (who I guess is higher up than the two agents) comes in and asks Meriam whether she's there of her own free will. Meriam says she is. Jim asks if she wants to stay. Meriam says she does. Jim tells her to ask for asylum, and she's entitled to a hearing. Jim points out that it won't be nice -- in Bahrain, she's a princess and in the States she's "just another illegal." Meriam asks if Zack can be with her at the hearing. Jim tells her that she has to do it on her own. He encourages her to take the plane back home. Meriam considers and then asks if he's ever been to Bahrain. Jim hasn't, but he hears it's beautiful. Meriam tells him about the Tree of Life, and says that it's beautiful because it survives despite having no water around it. Jim asks her point. Yeah, word, Jim. Meriam says that she's staying. Jim nods.

Meriam is in an orange prison jumpsuit, being led to a cell by two guards. She looks at the cell as other women yell for the guards. The door slams behind her. It would have been funny if Vern Schillinger had walked by, pushing his mail cart or something. "Welcome to Oz, Meriam."

Zack is in a takeout-food-filled motel room, on the phone. He yells at the person on the other end, because the person won't tell him if Meriam's even still in the country.

Meriam is telling an I.N.S. agent that she's done the worst thing in the world -- fallen in love with a foreigner, an American, and a Christian. The agent says that her parents want her back, and can't believe that her parents would hurt Meriam. Meriam replies that it's not just her parents -- she's dishonored her whole country. Meriam tells a story about a woman who came back to Bahrain with her British husband to visit. Her relatives refused to recognize the marriage and wanted to lock the woman away and force her to have an operation to restore her virginity, and not allow her to leave Bahrain again. The woman and her husband hid for eight weeks before escaping. The agent asks if something like that would happen to Meriam. Meriam says that she doesn't know, and she's afraid. The agent asks if she's afraid here. The agent tells Meriam that they invited Zack to the interview and he didn't show up -- he's gone back to Las Vegas and abandoned her. Lies! All lies! Meriam doesn't believe it. She brings up the Marines waiting thing. Jim from earlier looks sad.
