MONDO EXTRAS

Oh, Those Wacky Muslims

by Kim February 26, 2001
The Princess & the Marine

Zack is in the mall, and he spots some twelve-year-olds, and thinks they're Meriam. Okay, they might have been a little older than that, but not much. He spots Meriam's friends, and they shake their heads at him.

Meriam is in her bedroom. Her little sister runs in and announces that it's her birthday, and her mother is taking her to the mall. She wants Meriam to come too. Meriam looks to her mother, who agrees.

At the mall, Meriam's bratty little sister begs her mom for a stuffed animal. Meriam spots Zack walking through the food court, so she gets permission from her mother to go buy a necklace from a jewelry kiosk. Mom and little sister go into the toy store. At the jewelry kiosk, Meriam borrows a pen and a piece of paper from the clerk and writes a note. She asks the clerk to give the note to Zack. The clerk seems reluctant, and finally agrees after Meriam agrees not to steal anything. The clerk gives Zack the note and waits while he writes a reply. Meriam keeps an eye on her mom and sister as the clerk returns and gives her the note. The clerk asks what it says, and Meriam tells her it says, "Will you marry me?" Meriam looks up at Zack and nods yes. They mouth, "I love you," to each other. Oh, look at that. I just puked all over my keyboard.

Meriam writes a letter to Zack. It's all mushy. I'm not going to repeat it here, because I've already had one accident and I don't need another. Little sister comes in and tells Meriam that her necklace broke and she hardly ever wore it. Meriam tells her to ask their mother to take them to the mall to get it fixed. Little sister wonders why their mother doesn't talk to Meriam anymore. The mother walks in and gives a big speech about God and family, and then invites Meriam to come and pray with her, and then they'll go to the mall.

Meriam writes another letter about her new robes for university, and how they cover every inch of her so that boys can't see her. Then it gets mushy again. Basically, she wants to make her own choices and get married right away, but she knows it won't happen. Meriam and her sister walk up to the same jewelry kiosk as before, and luckily, the same clerk is working. Meriam tells her about the broken necklace and hands her a bag filled with letters to Zack. Meriam offers the clerk some money, and the clerk says that it's "fun for [her]." She gives Meriam back a bag filled with letters from Zack. Oh, the subterfuge.

Zack writes a letter to Meriam. He's worried that he'll go back to the U.S. without seeing Meriam again. He has to go back in twenty days, and then he has two more years in the Marines. He promises Meriam that if she can't come with him now, he'll come back for her when he's out. Zack vows that he will "get [her] out of here now if [she] wants him to." Meriam reads the letter and scribbles, "Yes" on it, and then presumably send it back, although we don't see that part. And I was getting really attached to the jewelry kiosk clerk.
