Camelot? Well...Not Really.

The Reagans, Part II

Ar the White House, a Secret Service agent comes to Nancy as pounding, serious music plays. "Mrs. Reagan?" he says.

Ronnie is sitting up in the limo, looking like he's about to pass out. "We're here, sir," says the agent next to him. Ronnie insists that he doesn't want help. He climbs out of the limo himself. A line of doctors and nurse extra make sure to hold hands to the sides of their cheeks in surprise and horror. Zeljko jumps out of a car behind the POTUS limo and rushes over. The cops try to hold back the gathering crowd. Ronnie makes it inside the hospital, sees some doctors approach in slow motion, and collapses. His people hold him up like Jesus with the footsteps. Remember that time when you got shot and fell in the hospital? It was then that we were carrying you.

Jump fade to Nancy exiting a limo of her own and coming inside the hospital. Zeljko is there to meet her. He tells her that Ronnie took a bullet (was it for the Gipper?), but that he'll be all right. Nancy had been told Ronnie wasn't hurt. Nancy insists that she be taken to Ronnie's room. Zeljko resists, but Nancy says, "They don't understand how it is with us. He has to know I'm here." The thundering anti-music keeps booming. Nancy stops in the hall as she notices Jim Brady's wife. "Is he all right?" she asks. "No," Zeljko says. He leads Nancy toward the room where Ronnie's being treated. On the way, there's a bloody person on a stretcher. In the emergency room, Nancy rubs Ronnie's bare shoulder. We don't see any real sign that he's been shot. "Hi, Mommy," Ronnie says groggily. "I forgot to duck." Nancy asks if she can kiss him. She does. A thin, semi-bearded doctor asks to speak to Nancy. He tells her that the bullet is very close to Ron's heart, and that they need Nancy's permission to operate.

Cut to Reagan being wheeled to surgery. Nancy tells Ron she loves him as he's taken away amid doctors and lots of Secret Service guys. The OR door is shut on Nancy. She cries.

Inside the OR, the security guys are being told to back off. They won't. The doctor gets pissed. "Everybody back off! We are working here!" Man, it's tense in there. The doctor tells Ron -- who looks about ninety years old, all of a sudden -- that they're going to put him under. "Please tell me you're Republicans," Ronnie jokes weakly. "Today, we're all Republicans, Mr. President," the doctor says.

In the hospital lobby, Nancy, Zelkjo, Tower, and Meese are watching the White House press conference. The press secretary is telling reporters that the vice-president is flying to Washington. In mid-sentence, he's interrupted by Al Haig, who scoots him aside and tells folks that there are no alert measures necessary at this time. Zeljko and Meese exchange concerned looks. Haig offers to take questions. A reporter asks if "crisis management" has gone into effect. It has. A reporter asks who's running the government. Constitutionally, Haig says, you have the POTUS, the VP, and then the Secretary of State. "Oh, for God's sake, he got it wrong," Zeljko says, angrily. He says it's the Speaker of the House after the vice-president, not the Secretary of State. I don't think any of the other guys or Nancy knew that. Haig says he's in control at the White House pending the return of the VP. Ooh, power burn. Not good. Zeljko says that Haig's gone nuts. He goes to find a phone.
