The Will Arnett Interview

WC: Which is true.

WA: Which is true, but we do also really appreciate the people who watch and look for all the jokes and just appreciate all the attention to detail. I mean, Mitch Hurwitz is an incredibly detail-oriented tinkerer, you know, and he-- you know, the writers read T-W-o-P!

WC: Really?

WA: Oh, yeah! Your site is so good.

WC: Aw, you don't have to say that.

WA: No, it really is!

WC: Well, thank you.

WA: It's on my Bookmarks bar.

WC: What is it like having that direct access to your fans?

WA: It's very weird. It's also very dangerous, because if you run across somebody who's not a fan of what you do-- It's like with reviews. It's kind of hard not to read reviews, because we got so many and when they all started first coming out, you know this huge stack of reviews was sent around to everybody, and the problem is, if you believe the good ones, you've got to believe the bad ones. You've got to take it all with a grain of salt. And by reading them, you do realize that so many people like different characters and they like different things, and some people will react really positively to an episode while, the very same thing, other people will hate it. So you just can't take it to heart. It's interesting? But I can see how it could be really damaging. If somebody writes, "Oh my God! I love GOB, and I love what Will Arnett does as the character GOB," I've got to remind myself that that doesn't mean that now I can go buy a Ferrari. You know what I mean? It is what it is. And for me, too, being on the show, you really realize, we get a lot of praise, but it's such a writers' venue, our show, and so much of the credit -- any credit that we get -- I've got to give half of it, at least half of it, to the writers. Because they've created these characters. It really is such a collaboration, so put it this way: if somebody responds negatively to something that I do, then I'll just blame the writers!

WC: I think that's very healthy! Do you think that you would be as interested in the online response if you were on a show like, for example, 7th Heaven, that everyone hated? Or would you just not read it?

WA: I probably wouldn't read it. Not as a slam against [7th Heaven].

WC: That's just a hypothetical.

WA: Because I have a friend who's on and off that show.
