Just in case the Golden Globe Awards actually do make it to live TV and aren't forced to go black by a WGA picket line, here are the TWoP picks for who should be walking home with statues -- and who actually will. Don't blame us if you hate Atonement and it wins big: we don't get a vote. (But we did think Atonement was pretty great, so...)
Best Picture: Drama
American Gangster
Atonement
Eastern Promises
The Great Debaters
Michael Clayton
No Country For Old Men
There Will Be Blood
Should Win: In a great year for movies -- seriously, everything you've heard about 2007 being a bonanza of quality is true -- there are about four movies from this list that you could award in good conscience. The best of the lot is No Country For Old Men.
Will Win: No Country For Old Men. Seven nominees is kind of insane and will no doubt lead to some weird vote-splitting, but the Coens flick will take it home.
Best Actor: Drama
George Clooney -- Michael Clayton
Daniel Day-Lewis -- There Will Be Blood
James McAvoy -- Atonement
Viggo Mortensen -- Eastern Promises
Denzel Washington -- American Gangster
Should Win: Bear in mind that There Will Be Blood just opened, and thus hasn't been seen by the masses yet. But setting Daniel Day-Lewis aside, George Clooney gave by far the best performance of his career, and he deserved any kudos that come his way.
Will Win: Daniel Day-Lewis. Across-the-board raves plus the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press may feel they owe him for passing him over for Gangs Of New York will add up to a win.
Best Actress: Drama
Cate Blanchett -- Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Julie Christie -- Away From Her
Jodie Foster -- The Brave One
Angelina Jolie -- A Mighty Heart
Keira Knightley -- Atonement
Should Win: Julie Christie, no question about it. Away From Her is a movie that succeeds in its own right, and the fact that co-star Gordon Pinsent isn't getting half of the attention Christie has gotten for the film isn't cool, but Julie Christie brings it as an Alzheimer's patient slowly slipping away from the love of her life. We know, we know: "Alzheimer's? Oscar bait!" True enough. But this isn't just a performance full of blank-eyed stares and wilting beauty. It's an honest transformation and it's beautiful.
