When we get back from the commercials, Karen's singing Luke a lullaby as she pulls up his covers. She hum-sings "You Are My Sunshine," which I'm hoping is a remnant from their days growing up together, because if it's not, it's really barfy and I'm too tired to deal with this melodramatic crap. She leans in and says, "Open your eyes, Lucas, come on, honey." Oh boy -- then she lifts up his sleeve and sees the tattoo. Oh boy. She whisper-barks, "Is there anything that didn't change while I was gone?" Heh. Nothing like yelling at your kid when he's in a coma; and that's a hell of a way for Luke to get out of his punishment. Whitey comes into the room now, carrying his hat in his hand. Aw, Woda -- if there's anyone you'd ever want to see at the hospital during a crisis it would be him. He asks how Luke's doing, and Karen says he's the same. Woda asks, "And how about you?" Karen pulls up the blankets and her spirits as she says, "Oh, I'm fine." Whitey walks closer to her, stands right next to her, and then says, "You got a lot of talents, Karen, but lying is not one of them." This sweetness launches Karen right into Woda's comforting arms. Whitey bites his lip. Karen takes an emotional stroll down memory lane: "When Lucas was a little boy, we used to play this game, 'What would you do?' 'What would you do if I blacked out,' 'What would you do if the house caught fire.' I was his only parent." Her voice cracks. "I wanted to prepare him if anything happened to me." She cries, "But I wasn't prepared for something happening to him." The tears stream down her face. Woda says, "Why don't you take a break?" But Karen's on an emotional tear: "How could Keith be so careless? I trusted him with the only thing in the world that matters to me." Woda insists, "Lucas matters to Keith too." Karen shakes her head. "Karen, you have every reason to be angry, Lord knows, but no man ever loved a boy any more than Keith loves Lucas, and that ought to count for something." Can I get a witness? Can I get a witness? Amen, Whitey. Amen.
