New Kid On The Block

Henry has returned with pizza, which Lily presenting so clumsily that he compares it to roadkill. As Paul joins the family at the table, Henry gets up to leave with his plate. Lily puts a stop to that. "We eat together," she says. "Why," Henry setups. "Because I'm the mommy, that's why," Lily says. Apparently there's some family lore about an ugly T-shirt Lily owns with exactly that slogan, and Hannah jokes that if she dares to put it on the cops will find them right away. Henry, meanwhile, is so irritated about this claim that the family eats together that he has a flashback to their old life. It was similar in many ways: Henry was bitching about some other takeout, Tommy was playing video games (except on a huge plasma screen), and Hannah was just sort of wandering around. Lily looks so different in her flashback wig that for a minute I think that before they went on the lam she was being played by Wendie Malick. And how committed do you have to be to not getting caught if you're willing to actually recast your wife? But no, it's still Leslie Hope, however unrecognizable that hair makes her, and she looks disappointed as Paul calls to say he won't be home for dinner. Preppie-Henry looks at her sympathetically, then flashes back to the present. Where they "eat together."

Paul wants them to "practice." Henry complains, but his dad insists: "Pretend I'm one of your homies from school, okay?" Paul says, and goes into character: "So, um, bro, dude, you're totally new!" Hannah's completely mortified by this display, but he tips her a wink and continues. "Why'd you move here, man?" "My parents were sick of Philly," Henry grouches. Paul turns to Tommy and assumes the role of one of his teachers to ask if the kid has any family in Philly. "I have three grandparents," Tommy says. As Hannah rolls her eyes, because her littler brother is so very, very stupid, Lily gently reminds the kid that his grandparents are dead. "Grandma June is dead?!" Tommy cries in alarm. Two words, Raders: foster care. But Paul just tells him that "Mikey's grandma's dead." Okay, good practice, everyone. Hannah asks her dad whether he plans to get a job, and he says yes.. "Nothing fancy, though. We brought cash," Lily says. Henry asks how long it'll last, and Paul says that depends on how careful they are with it. "That's not what I meant," Henry says, and gets up to storm away from the table. I don't know what he did mean, but I do know that if he keeps wasting food like that, they'll burn through their money a lot quicker.
