Smack Talk

MamaKent is cooking. She giggles while talking by phone to a senator just as she's about to cut some celery. She wishes the senator a happy Thanksgiving. There's a knock at the back door. We see Papa Luthor framed in a festive Thanksgiving wreath. That is seriously old school and I love it. I bet MamaKent is the kind of mom who goes around poking you in the stomach and going, "Gobblegobble!" That rocks. She greets Papa happily and says that she was just about to call him. She says she didn't get his RSVP. "Ah," he says in that awesome Gloverian way, "that is why I'm here." With a lot of "uh"s, he stumbles his way into saying that he won't be able to make it. MamaKent says that's too bad; she was looking forward to seeing him. He tells her that after his wife died, he somehow decided to stop celebrating the holiday. Yeah, fuck those pilgrims. She asks him to make an exception because they'd love to have him over. Papa scoffs and says he doesn't think Clark would agree. Clark has actually been pretty friendly to Papa Luthor lately. Papa says that the holidays will be difficult enough this year for Clark without extra complications. How thoughtful of the Magnificent Bastard. Sweetly, MamaKent says he's not a complication; he's a part of her life now. She quietly says that she's very thankful for that. Papa's mouth works, but nothing comes out at first. "Do you know what that means to me?" he asks, and it just breaks your heart. He leans in close. MamaKent looks at him lovingly. He comes closer. They're about to kiss. Looking frightened, Papa Luthor pulls away. "Martha," he whispers. He backs away quickly, heading for the door. He says he didn't mean to -- that he's sorry, but -- well, he's just sorry. He leaves without waiting for MamaKent to tell him how totally hot that was. She's left teary-eyed. Magnificent!
