Nigel wastes no time getting down to the bottom of the footwear issue, and we see that Kayla isn't actually barefoot but has some zazzly lyrical shoes on. He expounds for a while about the technicalities of whether the dance was a true Viennese waltz, but he has plenty of compliments for Evan's strong partnering and Kayla's beautiful lines. Mary, too, has some nitpicking. She says that the song was about "power, pleasure, and pain." In that vein, there was a lack of power in some of the turns that was a bit painful. She also thinks the piece didn't flow as well as it could have, but Evan's lifts and elegance were amazing. She says Kayla never disappoints and that she is growing. Overall, it was "FABULOUS!" Debbie calls the routine a wonderful surprise. Direct quote to Evan: "Darling, you handled your big woman. You handled her! You handled your big woman, baby!" I heart Debbie Allen. She says she doesn't care what kind of waltz it was because they pulled it off. She says that Kayla has been a front-runner from the start and that Evan, with his quirky Gene Kelly-esque style, is more of a dark horse. In sum, it's a thumbs-up from Debbie.
Now it's time for Brandon's solo, his first of the season in fact. He dances to "In Your Eyes" by Jeffrey Gaines. Wow. I've had that version of this song on my iPod for years, thinking it was Edwin McCain. How can this man sound so much like that man? But I digress... Brandon's solo seems pretty much like a replica of his audition solo, which is to say spectacular -- if you'd never seen it before. And this time he's wearing a full-on T-shirt and khakis, Lord knows how he can do all the flips and turns and whatnot his dancing style requires in those. Overall, it was Brandon, so it was great, but I don't know if it was the strongest first solo.
Next up, Janette picks Ade to be her new partner. Ade's magic Afro pick couldn't be more psyched. I think it's actually sparkling with excitement! Yet again, there is a massive height differential, with Ade being the tallest fella and Janette the shortest gal. It matters less, though, because they're doing a NappyTabs hip-hop routine. One in which I'm guessing Janette will not need to actually lift Ade... So I think they're cool. The biggest challenge is to give Janette some funk. (Funny how they didn't even bother with the whole funk pep talk last week with Randi and Evan -- lost cause.) Ade and his funky little Cubana are dancing to "Love Sex Magic" by Ciara Featuring Justin Timberlake. As is only right, the magic Afro pick plays a starring role. Screw a pocket watch! That pick is positively hypnotic! Janette literally spends the entire dance chasing after it, save for a few occasions when Ade needs to recharge for the really funky bits and puts it back in his hair. Janette keeps up pretty well, especially more toward the end. Ade rips off a skirt to reveal hot pants, so I think that may have helped her. Homegirl needs to properly show off the booty if she's going to shake it proper, y'know. The dance is your standard fun NappyTabs fare, with one really cool partners somersault. Ade definitely brought it stronger of the two of them, though.
