Speaking of Nathan, his video bio is next. Poor Nathan really has been getting hated on in this recap. I shouldn't be so hard on him. He's a talented dancer and probably a super nice guy. He's just had a couple obnoxious moments, has underachieved on his potential, kind of fake-cried just now in his bio, and knocked out my beloved Victor last week. Doesn't make him worthy of such scorn. Having said that, he really needs to go this week. As per usual, his solo is amazing and completely not reflective of what he's shown in any of the partner dances. Afterwards he cries some more about how humble he is. (And, okay, about how much he loves his parents.)
Noelle and Ryan are back, this time with a smooth waltz. Ryan's blue silk shirt is unbuttoned down to his navel, almost, but I'm honestly surprised he's wearing one at all. Yes, even with a waltz. I think the whole routine is really beautiful, but it's more austere than emotional. This is the second time Noelle has struggled finding the appropriate emotional connection in a ballroom routine (remember her limp samba last week). Ryan 's the star here, and they pull out a crazy-ass spin that makes the whole thing feel more impressive than it was. A good routine but not great.
Nigel loved it, though he does tell Noelle he'd have liked more softness. Yes. Hey, I don't like how much Nigel and I are agreeing tonight either. Come talk to me when I start verbally groping Kathryn. Mary compliments Noelle's movement and footwork, which is true. Her problem was not in technique. Adam was totally mesmerized and calls them a "power partnership."
Ellenore's entire family moved to New York to get her closer to her dream. Hear that, FAMILY? Her solo goes to that weird Mark Kanemura place that I love so much, but she's definitely gotten better at showcasing technique there as well.
Ashleigh and Legacy, doing a hip-hop number. And it's vampires! But because it's Dave Scott, and he's awesome, we get Legacy in this totally iconic Dracula cape. Like he's Dead and Loving It. You guys, this is a pretty fun routine. Precise and yet smooth -- Dave makes great use of Legacy's kind of junior-varsity dangerousness. Where it's the illusion of danger even though he's just gonna stare at you. Which, duh, is the whole point of vampires these days. Legacy's also got some shoulder pads working overtime. Throw in some cool slo-mo moves, plus Ashleigh keeping up even better than she did with Jakob a few weeks ago. This girl is solid.
